Synthetic oil or not?

I still run conventional oil in my 1986 Toyota pickup and have since new, I hope they keep making it, it is getting harder to find these days

 

Not entirely true, most synthetics are made from group 5 and 6 base stocks. Your correct that there not many synthetic oil brands that can call themselves 100% synthetic.

 

Real dinosaur remains are getting hard to find. synthetic dinosaur oil is the way of the future.

 

Its certainly a way for these oil companies to charge more.

 

I'm no tribologist, but everything I've read on BITOG says only a few brands (products) are even group IV and V.

 

I run Motorcraft semi-synthetic.

 

Thanks again to folks that chimmed in to be helpful ..... like what a forum is for. I'm not sure why some have to call people lazy or ridicule someone for asking a question. Maybe it makes them feel better but it's not helpful.

 

I use to be pretty up on this stuff getting info from the reps at spectro oils here. All i know is mobil1 is blended from 4 and 5 base stocks, but their not rated a 100% synthetic, which is ok to. As far as type 6...that was a typo i made...meant 4.

I learned that avocado oil has a higher flash point than typical motor oil so I run that exclusively.

 

After a while you will realize most are just having fun.

Depending on your dealers level of greed, the Toyota oil can actually be very reasonable. I buy my 0W20 from the dealer for about the same price as buying the fancy stuff from a parts store. It’s kinda nice, on some level, to use the Toyota oil, if for no other reason than having them sitting on your shelf at home to impress your friends.

 

Has anyone else Walmart put the Supertech on clearance and sold it all out? The ones I go to marked all the 5 quart jugs down to $15 and the quart bottles were like $3.98. Every single 5 quart ones gone and the quart bottles of Supertech to.

 

My local dealer is very fair on the price.

Although the Toyota oil is manufactured by Mobil it is a Toyota exclusive formula, there is no off the shelf product that is identical to the Toyota branded product.

Does it matter.... Probably not, but as you said it looks impressive on the shelf too.

 

This engine can easily operate on 5w30. Don't ever pass up a good deal if it's not 0w20.

 

I would like to add that it makes exhaust smell pleasant to the motorists behind you.
