Does the 06 2.7 call for 5w-20? How many miles are you at now? Rotella is awesome stuff, I use it in my motorcycle, but it is quite a bit more viscous than 5w-20. Just curious how it is going.

I work for an automotive research company that tests candidate oils for purity, performance, sludging, deposits.... You name it! I'm by no means an expert, but I see first hand what the inside of an engine looks like after rigorous testing with whatever oil after a certain number of hours at a certain severity. As a mechanic, I get the pleasure of building the engines, installing them in test cells and putting them on test, then removal and disassembly. I also work closely with the metrology department, as well as the rating department.

As a result of what I have seen at work, I use shell rotella in all my cars. The Tacoma and the Supra get T6 synthetic, and my VW gets the 15W40 mineral.

I would recommend this to everyone.

Leak more, yes..... If the engine has spent many miles of it's life on mineral, then suddenly you switch to synthetix., This can definitely happen.

....But burn more?!! This is actually a myth! Synthetic oils are much more resistant to being burned by your engine, because they do not vaporize as readily as mineral oils do. Our engines (4.0l 1GR) are not prone to burning oil, so this isn't a huge concern, both other Toyotas such as the 2.3l 2AZ found in the Camry and RAV4 would really benefit from using our synthetic for sure.

I honestly don't know what makes me calls for its got 145k miles on it now and I live in western nc so it's not to cold I never take off from a cold start so I never worried to much!! Yeah man it seems good for me I ran it when I had diesels and just kept on using it bc it's so good and cheap.

2nd gen a synthetic blend is more than enough. Then about 75k switch to a high mileage.

"High mileage" is actually a bit of a scam. Like using the word "natural" on a food product, there is no industry standard for the term "Hugh mileage" nor is it regulated, nor does it need to meet specific standards. Usually, it means there is just a bunch more additives in the oil, which.... Like a previous user had mentioned, can lead to leaking seals or when clogged oil galleries if you have had any issues with sludging in the past.

On our trucks, it probably won't cause any harm, I just grimace a little bit every time I hear someone use that term, thinking that it's something beneficial.

It is, i personally wouldnt use it in a gas motor as it doesnt have the same cleaning additive package. But damn it works fantastic in my dirbikes / motorcycles.

Also, the 4.0L 1GR-FE calls for Xw-30 ..... anything thicker like Xw-40 of the shell rotella oils could mess with VVTI and oil pressure relief actually reducing lubrication.

Same as the term "full synthetic", I couldn't find any definition for that.

Yes, I use Rotella in my Honda Nighthawk 750 - perfect oil for a wet clutch bike! I wouldn't put it in my car or truck unless I owned a diesel however.

Yup. I had an 04 CRF250X with a 250R cam and 250R iginition mapping n rode the piss out of that bike.... had 700ish hours on the fully original motor and all it saw was rotella T 15w-40 before i sold it when it started to develop a bottom end rod knock..... if you know that motor.... you were lucky to get 200hrs before replacing the crank....

Rotella T6 5w-40 goes in the honda 919, honda grom (164bbk) and the 2014 WR450F exclusively for this reason.

But like stated rotella t doesnt have the same additive / detergent package as a gas motor oil and also does not have the necessary operating temperature weight so i stick to Mobile 1 0w-30 syn in the truck

I use amsoil for my vehicles and have for years. I pay $20 a year to be a "preferred customer", which reduces the price of their oil $3 a quart. they send out emails with free shipping codes regularly so the overall price is not too bad compared to other oils.

Synthetic is better oil and lasts longer between oil changes. In the long run you'll spend less on oil changes and protect the engine better.

Funny that we're still discussing synthetic vs conventional oil in 2017... I mean, Mobil 1 was introduced in 1974 :)
