My girlfriend bought a 00 celica with 160k on it and i put syn in it, well now its losing oil... not noticeably burning oil but its going threw around 2 quarts per 5k... i changed the headgasket as that was leaking oil into the spark plugs, seems to not be leaking there any more... any help would be much appreciated

Headgasket probably already had a problem before the switch to syn and was blocked by sludge. Syn cleaned it out and the problem came to light. Not unheard of on high mileage switches to syn.

don't know if this was mentioned, but years ago i had a full size bronco, i switched to synthetic around 80k miles, I bought the truck used, and soon after found all kinds of leaks, same thing on wifes golf, we were dating at the time, but its certainty is a credit to the viscosity of the oil, it find the nooks and crannies that dino oil doest get to, like old oil pans, and gaskets, valve cover gaskets, ect, ect.

That was the synthetic clearing out sludge left by the Dino oil. The leaks were there before, but the sludge had plugged them.

Synthetic or dino of the same weight, is the same weight. Synthetic is not "thinner" because it is synthetic.

As others have already stated, Synthetics cleaned out the sludge and heavy varnish deposits that dino was masking as your real problem and is not the problem when you have switched on a high mileage engine direct over to synthetics from dino.

I've been using Penzoil Platinum for a while now & I really like it, I was going to try Mobil 1 OW-30 but decided to stick with PP 5W-30 which I use on my G35 & Jeep Compass.

One quart per 2500 miles is well within normal oil usage limits for almost any manufacturer.

I've read here that both today's synthetics & Dinos are completely compatible. You can switch back anytime. Won't do any harm.:) Somebody even mentioned you could mix the two. Despite the previously mentioned drawback to going synthetic--It cleans out the dino sludge, as long as your engine is well maintained it won't hurt a thing to go back to dino oil.

Here we saw every imaginable use of our coolers. The ones that ran Synth looked brand new even after, in the case of a Class 8 truck, after 300,000 miles. My DDs are a 745i and a M3. I have never used anything but Mobil one. The M3 has 120,000 miles on it and if you take off the valve cover you would think the engine is less than a year old - its 13 years old. Bottom line is that convensional oils burn and create crud in your engine that can and will clog the passages that allow your engine to be properly cooled and lubricated.

At any price, it is the single best investment you can make in you vehicle if you plan on having it for any real length of time.

Thanks for adding this valuable insight.

None currently, but I would like a better sounding exhaust and perhaps a cold air pack and some color coded step bars
Thanks HBMurphy for your comment, if someone reads that and doesn't relate that to engine protection..... shame on them. Thanks again ...
We are about to change over to Mobil One on our brand new Subaru when we get to 3K and I already have Mobil One in my V6 Taco.

    Jeff 06, V6, SR5, 6spd, bone stock, still!
