Last week Toyota Canada sent out there bi-yearly news letter/magazine and in it they said that all Toyota's that use 5W30 they now recommend using 0w30 (a new fully synthetic Eco friendly low temp oil). Of course oil changes at Toyota in Canada are: 39$ for 5W30, 56$ for 0W30 (full Synthetic) and 77$ for regular Synthetic.
Has anyone else heard of this 0w30 oil that Toyota is pushing us to use up here?

Any engine that runs 5w30 can run 0w30. The only difference is the start up viscosity which is thinner with the 0w30. Thinner oil at start up is better for your engine anyway. Most damage occurs at start up, so the better flow of the thinner oil protects better. A better way to put it is both oils are the same a normal temps, but the 0w30 thickens less when it cools.

0w30 has been recomended for harsh/cold climate vehicles for a while.
the oil is thinner when coldest, easier on starts.

I've used AMSOIL products since 1978.

Extended drain intervals are real. Most folks forget that transmissions and differentials can benefit from synthetics too. My trucks have always rotted before anything mechanical had an issue.

AMSOIL offers premium, spin-on filters too. These are made to their specs by a contractor. The only filters that come close are those sold by Mobil 1.

Nowadays, brand really doesn't matter. As long as it meets your usage requirements. Brands with oil is an out-moded line of thinking.

I had issues with an engine getting sludged up with conventional Penzoil..
The series of engine wasn't a sludge buildup prone engine and it only had 60K-ish since I punched it +20 over and built it up..

Now I don't know about you, but after the engines 3rd rebuild after tanking out the sludge buildup and running Mobil 1 from the getgo and roughly 80K later I pulled ther pan and zero sludge..

I know it's been 10+ years since this happened to that engine,
but theres nothing that would make me use Penzoil products let alone their synthetic line if they didn't have their conventional formulated properly.. That experience has leaner me away from Penzoil..

    heres my route..
Synthetic Mobil 1 0w30 in my Tacoma ($22 bucks for 5 quorts (1 gallon) + filter
Non Syn Castrol GTX in a 02 Lancer ES..

those are my choices for oil..

Sorry for your bad experience with Pennzoil. I don't use it myself. Just never have. But my dad is religous with it. When I pulled his oil pan to change the gasket on his '83 S-10, it was probably 2003. The truck had around 250,000 miles on it. My dad bought it when it had 30k miles on it. He ran Pennzoil through it those other 220,000 miles. Very little sludge. Not enough to note. He kept the truck for another 100,000 miles before he sold it. The oil was pretty the day he sold it. The front end was gone, though. With those kind of miles, didn't make sense putting another front end on it. Anyway, use whatever makes you feel good. I usually get whatever is cheapest, and change it religiously. I researched this quite a bit for one truck I had. My findings were that brand was not so significant as frequency of change. As long as viscosity, grade, and service ratings are the same, there is little to no difference in brand. Now, this is one topic that nobody agrees on. I am an Industrial Maintenance Manager, and we use various hydraulic fluids. I had a rep in last week that swore to me that his new oil had additives that would help prolong the life of my seals and O-rings. I pressed him about it until he gave me a MDS with the breakdown. Guess what it said. Yes, same breakdown as my current oil, which is 7% cheaper than his "miracle oil". TIFWIW.

I just picked up my M1 Fully Synthetic and filter today for my oil change(first thing in the morning!) I halfway considered RP...used it for years in my Jeep( still do actually) but due to the fact that I can't always find it I'll go with M1. Someone told me once that RP is actually M1 with extra detergents added to it and of course coloring...I'll do a little research and see if I can back that claim up.

I dont think it makes a difference. Royal purple is retarded with the price. Not worth it.

None currently, but I would like a better sounding exhaust and perhaps a cold air pack and some color coded step bars
I am not sure Royal Purple is a favorite here in the NorthEast. Just don't seem to see it but when I did it definately was more than other syn's.

This is a very true statement... AS LONG as you change oils with in a reasonable time span, 3,000~5,000 miles.

There are some good (and bad) additives added to different oil brands.
So my self, I use Mobile 1 and change it (along with the filter) every 5k or less.

LOL, funny. You do realize how many "common men" own their stock, including via 401k and pension plans, right? You know, "common men" like myself. They also employ over 100,000 "common men", the majority right here in the US. You also realize there are many products made from the oil they pull out of the ground, right? The keyboard you typed on is probably made from ExxonMobil oil.
