Anyone have any thoughts or heard anything bad about the Napa brand synthetic? I know that it's made by Ashland (Valvoline) but I wonder if it has the same additive package as with Valvoline's brand name SynPower.

The stuff can be pretty cheap when on sale and so far I'm on my 2nd fill with the stuff. I only drive about 6k a year and do 6 months/3k miles changes (I know, I know, the oil is probably still somewhat good yet) but I drive in a lot of stop and go traffic in town. I know that I'm probably wasting oil, but I prefer more frequent oil changes than to run a super expensive synthetic over 10k+ miles.

Then again who knows anyone that has had actual oil breakdown issues with nornal 5K oil intervals with conventional. I haven't.

The Kendall synthetic w/titanium is a very good premium oil. We have been using Kendall in our shop for a long time. Their diesel oils are some of the best out there. Kendall doesn't do a lot of advertising, so a lot of people haven't heard of it but they have been around for a long time.

BITOG forums say that the NAPA synthetic (made by same maker as Valvoline synth) is the same base stock, with a slightly less expensive/extensive additive package.

As I recall, the consensus was that it is a quality synthetic, but that it might be less able to handle really extended (10k+) change intervals.

Red line is an excellent high end synthetic. Its pricey, but worth it. When I was racing, I got Red line as a sponsor for a couple of seasons (they provided all my lubricants). After switching to Red line from Castrol, I never experienced another lubrication related drive train failure. That sold me on their product.

Interesting...thanks! I would run with a more expensive synthetic, but I'd much rather have a shorter OCI than to trust any oil for more than 10k IMHO.

In all my driving years among all my cars and motorcycles about the only failure I've never experienced is a lubrication-related failure. And that's over a lot of engines big/small, good conditions and bad with much poorer oils than we have today. Of course I'm not racing, but racing engines typically get a lot more attention than a daily driver (like mine!) does.

Redline may or may not be intended for daily driver use, but for this discussion I'll just accept that it's a great oil. That said, and since I'm about 99% positive I'll never have a lubrication related failure, I just have to wonder what real value paying 20-30% more for oil gets me.

I had one oil related engine failure in an Isuzu Trooper while using Castrol.

    What are the details?

My wife had oil related engine failure but it was after a sensor leaked and she kept driving for 200+ miles with the oil light on, it wasn't because of the castrol GTX I used at the time.

Not sure actually, no warning light, running great, then just sounded like a bunch of rocks in a dryer. Shut it down, had it towed to dealer, rebuilt engine paid for under extended warranty. They claimed the engine was "starving for oil" although no lights oil level fine.
