I worked for Mobil twenty five years ago and went to "oil school" where they showed Mobil 1 vs conventional in two engines and then drained the oil in both and ran the engines at a high rpm. The conventional engine lasted a few minutes and the Mobil 1 lasted what seemed like an eternity. Was only a video of the test but none the less I was impressed and have been using it ever since. Comes standard in Corvettes, Porsche, AMG etc so its fine for break in oil also... 22 bucks for a 5 quart jug at Walmart

In the past I always used Mobil 1 full syn, however this last oil change, I switched to Shaeffer's 5w30 9000 (while still using Mobil 1 filter). Oil changes are every 5,000. No complaints. 157 k miles 22.2 mpg

What viscosity are most of you using ? I just did an oil change with Mobil 1 10/30, and then noticed it says 5/30 on the fill cap, I'm sure it's no problem, I use between 5/20 to 15/50 in my turbo'd dodge neon (depends on time of year), but I seem to remember some of the dodge truck engines (4.7L I think) would have some issues with 10/30 when they should've had 5/30...
Truck runs fine after the oil change, just wondering

5w30 until you've got like 200k on it.
You'll be okay with 10w30 during the summer, but your fuel economy may suffer a bit. Move back to 5w30 on your next change.

Toyota's official stance is in the owner's manual.

Yup... Limit 3 boxes, I got my 3 yesterday.
Might see if I can score 3 more.

I like the 5qt jugs because it makes it easier to return the old oil to Vatozone, but I've got at least 7 or 8 out there now and don't really need more than 4 for the Taco and the Rav plus spares in case I need another change before I return the used oil.

But an even better deal at Costco is Johnny Walker Blue.

Now, even at the Costco post-instant-rebate price of just under $130, it's still not a Scotch you'd take to a frat party, but for those who typically offer valuable gifts to valuable clients for the holidays, now's the time to stock up. Normal BevMo price is $180 and prices of $200 are common.

I've got 50k+ on my truck. Glad to read it's no to late to go to synthetic. Going to Toyota to get me some oem filters than to Costco to pick up a few cases of Mobile1 5-30 while their on sale. :D

Castrol GTX 10-30w.. I've used this oil in my last 5 Toyota's (1983-2012) which i've all run up to 250-300K miles and no issues. No sludge build up. I change my oil/filter every 4-5K miles. Your truck not going to be worth any more running synthetic oil over all those years compared to conventional.. And I don't care what Porsche, Ferrari, etc but in their cars, Toyota used conventional oil in my brand new truck.

I'll save my money and buy other goodies for my truck...

    No they didn't.

Your 2012 came with 0w20 synthetic.
Read your owner's manual. Things have changed since 1980.

No it doesn't.. Conventional here dude. I just had in the dealer last month for my first free oil change and it's conventional. The 2011 Corolla I bought my mom last year has conventional also...

2012 is the first year they've gone to requiring synthetic 0w20, and just because the dealer used 5w30 non-synthetic on your "free" oil change doesn't mean it's the correct oil to use.

Like I said... check your owner's manual. The 2012 Tacoma uses 0w20 synthetic and not 5w30 recommended for older models.

See attached... straight from Toyota if you don't believe me.
