Amsoil was synthetic oil of choice for my 330i at a popular bmw forum. But, Mobil 1 was also recommended since Amsoil is hard to get. Bimmers use Castrol synthetic from stock and first oil change to be done by dealer at 15k miles. I personally use Mobil 1 Extended Performace for this reason. And, I do my own oil changes every 12 months (average 11-12k miles/yr.) I'll be doing the same with my Tacoma.

None currently, but I would like a better sounding exhaust and perhaps a cold air pack and some color coded step bars
Wonder why Amsoil doesn't have many outlets in the NorthEast?

Whats the cost for a filter/oil change with synthetic?
    Dealer?
    Do it yourself?
I have always used dino oil and have it done at the dealer, rotate the tires at the same time.

I just buy it online.Delivered in 2-3 days.
I'm a 'preferred customer' and get 20%-25% off though it costs $10 for 6 months membership,it's still worth it.
I love using Amsoil oil and filters.

Beginner question so please don't throw anything at me but what are the "real" benefits of running synthetic oil? My Tacoma is still under 1k so I haven't done an oil change yet... Just curious.

    Self - Oil $25 Filter $5 =~$30
Dealer - unk (does not stock synthetic oil)
Fast Lube Joint - ~$60 - $70 (some do not stock full synthetic, most stock blends)

Reason for using synthetic? Extreme cold/hot weather performance. Low sludge potential. I can afford the peace of mind.

It lubricates your engine better so your engine runs more smootly and can even give you better MPG and more power. I used Royal Purple in my chevy and noticed a diffrence i plan to due the same to my tacoma as soon as i hit 3000 mi. There is also synthetic Transmission and Rear end oil too.

I heard you don't want to start running synthetic oil until after 10k?

    Fact or Fiction?

    Fiction.

    Reality:

You can start using Mobil 1 or other synthetic in new vehicles at any time, even in brand new vehicles. In fact, Mobil 1 is original equipment (it is installed at the factory) in:
    • Acura RDX
    • Aston Martin
    • All Bentley Vehicles
    • All Cadillac Vehicles
    • Chevrolet Corvette C6 and Z06
    • Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS
    • Chrysler 300C SRT-8
    • Cobalt SS S/C Coupe
    • Dodge Caliber SRT-4, Charger SRT-8, and Magnum SRT-8
    • Jeep Cherokee SRT-8
    • Mercedes-Benz AMG Vehicles
    • Mercedes SLR
    • Mitsubishi Evolution
    • Pontiac Solstice GXP
    • All Porsche Vehicles
    • Saturn Ion Red Line and Saturn Sky Red Line
    • Viper SRT-10
One of the myths surrounding synthetic oils is that new engines require a break-in period with conventional oil. The fact is, current engine manufacturing technology does not require this break-in period. As indicated by the decisions of the engineers who design the high-performance cars listed above, Mobil 1 can be used starting the day you drive the car off the showroom floor.

I have been using the 5w20 syntec and changing it every 3500 miles since I got my truck. It is cheap insurance.

Joe B is correct, while many individuals wait till their 1st or 2nd oil change(I did) all of the above use syn oil from the factory. The closer tolerances and modern foundry and factory CAD design allow for a much better engineered engine build.
You cannot go wrong either way.

from mobile 1 to castrol syntec i didnt notice a big difference. but just cause castrol syntec is a tad bit cheaper and just as good i'll stick with castrol. plus the mom's bmw uses castrol brand oil (euro blend). if its good enough for a beemer its goodenough for my truck!

One of the benefits of syn oil, is the longer time periods between oil changes and especially on a new engine, little to no sludge build up, better cold weather protection etc.

Good quality oil, a steady oil change program, with a good filter( I have always used the stock filter from my local Taco dealer, while I rarely take my truck into the dealer, I like the fact that my dealer knows I am in there all the time buying filters etc), is the key to long term engine care.

I went to Wally World to get some M1 and saw the Royal Purple was a dime more a quart so I thought I'd give it a shot. Castrol Syntec was the same price as the M1 too..?
