My BMW had a 7.5 l. Oil pan. They recommended 15000km between changes if I recall. Manual called for synth. However the double service life was due to double the amount of oil to contaminate, not because it was synth.
    Dirty oll is still dirty.
As long as you periodically get the oil to operating temp to evaporate volatile organics and condensation, go with miles. Only ever make short trips in town, go with time. The oil is dirtier than it would be with longer run times.

My wife's audi when it first came out said dino oil was fine. Then after many engine failures due to sludge, they said synthetic only. Sludge issues subsided. You ask me that was not mobile paying to be placed in the car, that's a manufacture saving their bacon from lawsuits down the road. And proof enough that synthetic is better then old school dino.

I love Pennz Plat in my gen 1. It seems to smooth out engine idle better than mobil 1. Plus its cheaper, so why the hell not

Costco is again running their $10 off instant rebate on M1 6-packs starting the 16th.

They didn't have 0w20 or 5w20 last year, but I'm pretty well stocked on that. I do need more 5w30 for my wife's Rav4.

I have used M1 since day 1. With 82k on it I still have really good power. Synthetics resist thermal breakdown & maintain low temp viscosity. Both good things for a everyday driver in WI.

Anything but Pennzoil! That shit creates sludge in your engine. Use Castrol or Mobil 1.

Not personal experience, but I work at O'Reillys and not only do the managers (who have all gone to tech school) make this claim, many of the commercial mechanics do too. A few of the people there have actually analyzed the oil while at school and said Mobil 1 was superior to the others, especially Pennzoil. And that's good enough reason for me to not use it!

The tech specs are available online. Mobil 1 and Amsoil are roughly similar, very little difference between the two. The pour point is better with Amsoil, but when you're talking about -50 degrees F or thereabouts does it really matter?

Pennzoil, Castrol, I haven't looked at them too much. I'm an Amsoil guy and they spec out at the top all the time. Mobil 1 guys can say the same, but I like dealing with my local Amsoil guy running a business out of his house. Same price as Mobil 1 and all the other brands, but I like dealing with a local guy.

    And totally untrue.

It's an old myth that started back in the 60s.
Texaco or Gulf ran an ad campaign claiming that the "paraffin-based" Pennsylvania crude oils" caused sludge buildup and Texas oil didn't.

It has never been true, and everyone who has worked in auto parts has heard it and believes it to be true. There is nothing wrong with Pennzoil or Quaker State oil.

Now Pennzoil filters? They are rebranded Fram.

It's kinda like the old Bell advertising slogan "If you have a $10 head, buy a $10 helmet"... and it's now quoted as gospel by people trying to persuade you that there really is a difference other than graphics between a $150 HJC helmet and a $500 Troy Lee Designs helmet.
Ironically... it was Bell's slogan, and now who sells helmets for $50 at Pep Boys and Walmart... Bell.

Interesting as always. It would be hard to imagine how Pennzoil could sell oil that causes sludge.

I can say for a fact that, back in the early '70s, i witnessed some serious sludge on my own car that was on a steady diet of pennzoil. I was a believer in pennzoil until i pulled the valve cover and saw a 3/8 thick coating of black wax.

That was then though...times have changed. I'm running pennzoil ultra in my miata right now with confidence.

Rotella t6 in the tacoma....m1 0/30 afe next time.

You should do a little more research. Pennzoil Platinum and Pennzoil Ultra are fantastic motor oils. They are considered to be among the best available.

BITOG is your friend. Literally millions of miles logged on various oils in just about every possible vehicle with a lot of data available to you

If I walked into an auto parts store and had a guy tell me that Pennzoil caused sludge I would just turn around and walk away

Most oils caused a modest amount of sludge in those days, but the marketing would have you believe that it was only the Pennsylvania crude that did.
There's a reason that API SE is no longer available retail.

    I use Redline
There's only one place that sells it out here, and they told me that they're the only brand they know of (or carry) that the manufacturer has to inspect and approve their business before they will allow them to carry their product
Not saying that means anything pertaining to the quality one way or another, was just interesting
