I come from riding motorcycles, and there the oil is more important!
It's been proven that in "wet clutch" bikes synthetic oils withstand oil sheer better. (Mobil 1)
Our trucks don't have that problem....
So the wear factor is at the extremes. The build up of containments is the most important thing to worry about. Any modern rated oil changed by around 5,000 miles will last, just change the oil & filter regularly.

By the way I still run Mobil 1 synthetic in my Taco, just like my bikes. Why? Habit :D

What kind of bike do you have? I had a 2005 CBR 600rr, and it specifically stated no molybdenum based oil which I believe most synthetics contain.

No oils are molybdenum "based". Molly is an addative. No motor oils use any molybdenum phosphate compounds. The compound used is molybdenum trialkyldithiocarbamate or a related carbamate.

I think there is no question that Synthetic is a better oil, it's just weather the costs can be justified.
To me the extra $20 for synthetic every few months (I change my oil at 4,000k) is no big deal, and to me is worth it, even if the added benefits are minimal since I change it regularily.
My last Tacoma had 430,000km, my 4Runner 470,000km and my Camry 440,000km and all still ran fine when I sold them.
Did the synthetic oil help them last that long, who knows? But for an extra $60-$100 a year to me it's worth the peace of mind.

I know that this horse has been beaten to death, but here come a few more whips...

I am a helicopter pilot and we only use Synthetic Oil in the aircraft. This is for 2 primary reasons: (1) the Engines weigh roughly the same as a car engine but produce 10 times the horsepower and run at 10 times the speed, and (2) the stakes are too high for any component to fail.

    (1) The engines have to produce a LOT of power and cannot weigh very much so they are made of fancy materials, and the engineering tolerances in them are very tight, hence they cost well over $1 million a piece. Synthetic oil is very stable and consistent throughout the temperature spectrum and so it keeps all the parts where they are supposed to be in relation to each other.

    (2) If the main gear box or engines on a helicopter fails, everyone dies. Not to be melodramatic, but that is just the way it works. There is also the cost associated with the compontents, if you have roughly $10-15 million per aircraft tied up in engines and gearboxes, then the relative cost/benefit equation of synthetic oil changes.

I can see having to use Synthetic oil in a car or truck for really one reason; you operate in a regime where you cannot accept the engine failing for any reason. If you are a Park Ranger in the Yukon and are 300 miles from the next person, or a fire engine/ambulance for example. Other than that the engine giving up and dying is an inconvience, not a life or death event. I have a Taco for one big reason, when I was in Afghanistan I saw nothing but Hiluxes driving around the country, and like our Top Gear friends demonstrated, they really are indestructable. I have a really hard time believing that those trucks are running Synthetic, but they run for ever with little or no preventative mainteance on crappy fuel in absurd conditions. Another group of abusive drivers use regular oil (supposedly), and that is New York cabbies. I have a hard time thinking of another profession that is worse to their vehicles than cabbies. They run the all the time, stop and go, in lousy weather and allegedly run regular oil.

The bottom line: is synthetic oil hurting your motor, absolutely not. If it makes you sleep better at night, then go nuts and pour it in. I used to run synthetic in everything, cars, lawnmowers etc..., but recently I kind of got over it. I have come to believe that rather than paying twice as much for an oil change, I will change my oil more frequently which should work out in the long run.

I will say that I have always heard that going Synthetic is a one way trip. I am not sure if this is true, but my understanding is that the seals will eat themselves if you go back to regular oil. I would need independent confirmation on this. I took my wifes Highlander for its first oil change to the dealer and he talked me out of Synthetic. He basically said that he did not see a difference in regular and synthetic running engines having problems later on. Just my 2 cents worth...

I am new here and really like the forum. I know that this is a repeat thread for most of you, but it is good to see for us newbes.
