Do you think the dealer knows anything about petrochemical engineering? Neither does your typical mechanic.

When I had the BMW x3 it used 7.5 litres for an oil change. Dealer uses synth. Once the warranty runs out, with the $60 filter kit you are looking at a $300+ oil change. Quickie lube shops won't touch it cause it doesn't have a dipstick.
You think long and hard about whether to invest in 8 L/ qts of synth. I could do at least 2 natural oil changes in materials alone, do it more frequently, and have cleaner oil.
Re breaking-in ... My motorcycle has its first maintenance at 3000km. At that time the dealer recommends synth, but not before.
If its frigging cold where you live synth is way better for cold starts. If you live in Texas, the higher temp tolerance is better on synth. However water cooled engines even in hot climates stay in a narrow temperature zone.
I'd vote regular oil and change often. Even synth contaminates at the same rate as natural oil, so you still have to change it to flush the dirty oil. Synth may keep its lubricating properties longer, but dirty oil is just that.
Air cooled motorcycle ... Synth al, the way due to potentially higher engine temps in hot weather and city speeds.
Heavy service situations like 4wd in 2lo high revs and odd angles, synth as an ace up the sleeve for any added value. same for towing that 4500 lb trailer.
    Commuting. Just the regular please.
Depends on how you use it

Frequent initial oil changes on motorbikes is recommended because the crankcase shares the oil with the gearbox and clutch. There's more particulates present in the initial break-in period of your motorbike, which is why its often recommended to change the oil within the first 1000 km's of riding, and again at 1500-2000. This is not the case with automotive applications. Using a more expensive synthetic right away doesn't make sense from a financial standpoint in this case.

Again, like you said, it's all about the cold starts. They operate in a narrow temperature zone - once they're up to temperature.
