Definitely switch! I have an 01 Double Cab V6 Prerunner. About to tick over to 187k miles and just switched on my last oil change. Truck would vibrate some while at red lights. Now it doesn't do it. BTW, I used Mobil 1 Full Synthetic High Mileage 5w30

I'm not scared to go synthetic. Truck has 170xxx miles so far on Dino and semi Dino, whichever was decent price at Walmart. Going with Shell t6 5w40 "synthetic diesel oil" also from the Walmart. Switching over the 1994 miata at 207k and 2003 protege with 180k. Heck even my dr650. This way I just have to worry about using one oil when they start leaking.

Pray tell us what brand of oil you switched to....

Most likely your clapped out old engine was leaking all along, and you just began really paying attention to it when you did the oil switch. In any case, one uncontrolled experience by one guy, doesn't exactly constitute a valid scientific experiment.

My 95.5 has only seen mobil 1 5w30 since it's first oil change at 500 original miles in 1995. I can't compare because it's still here like new.

[IMG] The pic is with 277,000. I just hit 301,000!!!!

Mobil 1. It was a perfectly good engine and soon as I changed back to regular oil it stopped leaking. I switched back because a well known engine builder told me it was common to experience leaks when switching to synthetic. Since then I have learned it is extremely common so I don't understand what it is you are trying to refute. Already several people on here have chimed in with same experience. I may not have the most experience, but I did spend several years as a mechanic rebuilding engines and hydraulic systems.

I've been running synthetic in mine for about 70,000 miles and my current oil of choice is Pennzoil Platinum Pure Plus. It is a pretty good oil and I have tried Mobil 1 5w-30 and Mobil 1 0w-40 which is their best oil but I noticed more valve train noise with both. I will agree with most guys saying it will cause oil leaks but I'm cool with that. I would like to be better protected than dino oil.

From my understanding the risk for leaks is highest with when you run an engine a long time on conventional oil and then switch to synthetic. The exchange of the oils, and their chemical properties, that have seeped into the seals is what causes the issue from my understanding. If you run a truck on synthetic oil from the first change though, and run the same oil weight and manufacturer every time, you won't have the same issues with leaks.

That was told to me by a couple of shop hands years ago. It could be wrong but I've never seen a vehicle leak oil after 200,000 km's of consistent changes with either Mobil 1, Coop Gold, or Pennzoil Platinum. If any of those were dissolving seals I'd think after that span I'd notice on the work trucks I see in our fleet.

That seems to be the general consensus by most, but it sure seems to rustle some feathers on the interwebs

Thanx. I took a chance with synthetic in 1995. Not much known about syn. then. Saw a info commercial and decided to try. Worked out fine. Also still original timing chain with 301,xxx!!
