    Alright so I am getting some distortion from my passenger side speakers. Not so happy about it. I could get it taken care of under warranty (my truck is 08 with 28k miles), however I don't want the same stock crap in there.

    The plan:

    It's simple. Get stuff slightly used for good price and install it myself (It's piece of cake).

    The mission:

    Sound quality! I don't want system which will have a lot of BOOM or which has components which can push 75W RMS each. I would like system with nice HU with AUX input, 2 channel amplifier which can push 50-60W RMS/channel and most importantly good component speakers with good sound quality which can push 50-60W RMS. Components I will most likely buy new, since I don't want to risk getting damaged pair.

    Stuff I will need:


    1, HU
    - single DIN
    - must have mp2/wma playback
    - must have AUX input
    - must have detachable face
    - must NOT have motorized face
    - must have TWO RCA outputs

    2, wiring harness

    3, dash kit

    4, Amplifier
    - 2channel
    - 50-60W RMS
    - must fit under bench seat on passenger side

    5, Component speakers
    - good sound quality
    - no distortion when turned up
    - 50-60W RMS

    The plan is to add a mono block amp with single 10" sub later on.

    Now for my questions;

    I would like suggestions on brands for HU, amp and components. What brands are decent, what brands to stay away from. What different dash kits are out there, which fits best. Do I need spacers for components?

    I would upgrade HU first, then ad on amp & components.

    Please let me know!

    Hi,
    I just posted almost the same question, but regarding a sub in my 2008 SR5 4x4 Reg Cab and was very disappointed in the response (zero). So, I'll jump out and tell you what I did.
    I didn't need a really high end HU so I bought, on sale, a Kenwood KDC-HD545U. At the time, I did not expect to add an amp right away, but it had nice features that I liked (USB port for Ipod in the front of the unit), HD Radio built in, etc... It was $139 on Crutchfeld, who also provided a free install unit wire harnesses and master sheet on the vehicle. Made it a really easy install. I also found, on Crutchfield, a pair of JL VR525 CSi component speakers on sale for $149. Looked on crutchfield today and they're $299. Again, free wiring harness and free speaker adaptors.

    The issue you'll have w/ the tweeter is that the factory tweeter has a bracket welded to it. So either go to tacotunes.com and order their adaptors, or be prepared to manufacture your own. I traced the factory bracket onto 1/2 plywood, drilled a 1 1/2 in hole for the tweeter, superglued it into the plywood bracket, drill pilot holes in the plywood and ran some short wood screws through the factory tweeter bracket hole. The wiring is confusing, too. It appears that in the factory woofer/tweeter config that a very tinly crossover was on the tweeter so the same colored wires went to both speakers w/out any distinction. So, I traced them back through the wiring boot inside the vehicle and tapped them there since I was going to a crossover anyway and didn't want to put them inside the doors (crossovers are mounted high on the plastic kick panel on either side of the truck).

    Hope this helps you some. I bought a bazooka passive (i thought) sub on ebay and found out it's powered at 100 W, so I had to order bazooka's wiring harness to input my low power pre outs from the deck.

    And oh yeah, I was on ebay and found harmanaudio's store. they sell all JBL, Infinity, HarmanKardon refurbs. Bought some home speakers from them a few years ago and found a JBL GT5-A604 amp for $51 delivered to the house w/ a 1 year warranty. So it's going to drive the components now.

    I am thinking of getting Alpine CDE-102 HU. I want two sets of RCA outputs. Expandability... It can be had for about $120 new on ebay... NOT bad.

    For the amp... 2channel I think 2x 60W RMS will be enough to power up regular cab.... I never listen to my stereo loud. However sound quality matters to me.     Speakers.... Well I could just throw in some 5 1/4" Alpine Type S speakers Coaxial and call it a day without messing with the tweeters... The Type S are rated at 55W RMS, which should be perfect match for the Kenwood amp... Still don't really know what is the difference between speakers with tweeters built in (coaxial) or between speakers which have speaker, tweeter and cross over (components). The only difference I see is that components are more expensive than coaxials...

    I am not worried about fabbing up brackets. Piece of cake...

    i have already done what you plan on doing. i have all kenwood. the only difference is that i haven't replaced the mid-range tweeters yet. i'm going to update my build in alittle bit

    Honestly I would try to find one that has at least 3 RCA outs, just in case you want to run rear speakers. Your amp choice sounds good, but just remember that placing the amps under the seats isn't the most ideal location (I speak from experience) they tend to overheat once in awhile down there, but it does hide them and keep them out of the way.

    If your looking for sound quality I would not go with coaxial speakers. The speaker placement in the Tacoma's are pretty decent, and it really helps to have the tweeter farther up in the door for better imaging. The tweeters are not very hard to put in; just buy some MDF adapters from either EBay or Mr. Marv. You shouldn't need to make any adapters. Make sure you specify that they are for a regular cab; we have 6 1/2" round speaker holes vs. the 6X9 type that the Access/Double cabs have. Also if you run amp'd speakers you should run your own speaker wire. Another problem with coaxial is that they run in-line crossovers, like the ones that come stock on our trucks. these usually don't get the job done as well as a full sized crossover.

    its true coaxials do not have as good sound imaging as component speakers. but imo good quality speakers are better than stock. my dad repairs home audio speakers and he laughed when i dropped one of the factory speakers in his hand. im surprised how the tiny magnet stood up to the levels of punishment i dealt. good luck man and post pics when you get everything installed

    Alright. You guys sold me on Components. Now I just gotta pick up some extra work so I can spend some money on this system...LOL

    Does the Bazooka tube fit behind the passenger seat in a regular cab Taco? Can you get the seat all the way back? I'm looking at the 6.5" powered tube on Crutchfield.

    I have the 8" powered sub behind my driver seat and there are no issues w seat
