Ah planetary gear set! Well... sh*t !

Once of the "Pros" for my crazy EV truck obsession is the fact no transmission or T-case is need for 4Low or larger tires (instant torque and all).

Aside from the difficulties it’s not really worth it. Teraflex made low gears for the 231 called the Teralow kit which converted the older 2.72 NP231s to 4:1 but they no longer manufacture them despite some demand.

That said even if it were possible in the Toyota Tcase the demand would be low. The reason is that MT only make up about 5% of Tacoma sales and the people who off-rod on difficult trails that would need a low crawl ratio is even smaller.

Most hardcore off-roading is moving to automatic transmissions and the combination of the torque converter make it more ideal with off-roading and normal driving. You don’t need 100:1 drive ratios with an automatic which makes the vehicle much more drivable in all other conditions.

Jeep and Bronco are marketing an option for manual transmissions that do need 100:1 but again these models make up a minority of sales. My buddy paid $50k for his JL Rubicon and some JT Rubicon’s are going for $60k+.

The easiest way to obtain a nice low crawl ratio would be adapting / fitting a Granny gear transmission with a compound low 1rst gear with 6.00 or or lower ratio . Advanced Adapters makes engine / transmission / t-case adapters for alot of configurations . That alone would get you into the 70.1:1 low range ratio

    I've even heard of a Dodge NV4500 5spd bolting up to 3.4 Toyota V6 In a Tacoma , that transmission has a 6.34:1 1rst gear

Another is getting a custom made Atlas t/case made with 4.0:1 low range

My old 1968 M38A1 Jeep Rock Crawler had an Atlas t/case with 4.0:1 low range and with GM 465 compound low 1rst gear of 6.54.1 and axle ratio of 5.38.1 my overall low range ratio was 140.1

    I originally had a SM420 compound low 4spd 7.20.1 1rst gear and a 3.50 low range t / case which was 135.1 overall low range

It was so low geared I could get out of my jeep and walk next to it on the trail and going down steep hills I had to use throttle input or it wouldn't move

Similar, I have an SM 465 paired to an NP231 with 5.38s which puts me at about 95:1

What is the transfer case gear ratio anyway? I can't find it anywhere.
