I guess the biggest question is, why is this happening? After washing my truck today I noticed some water in this area on my passenger side door sill. If water is getting past the main door seal and getting trapped in the door sill, that could be the cause. I don’t have rust but my truck is only a few week old. Anyone else noticed water in this area after rain or a wash?

water is always going to be in that area on most any car. poor paint prep / paint . thin in area. salt and sand get flung in there and then scratched around.

I had the same small rust spot on my 2016. It was just another reason that I traded it in on my 2021.

2017 at 49k miles my local dealership 'Eddys Toyota ' wouldn't bother. I forgot to take before picture but the corrosion is around those 2 pitch welds. 20201121_105755.jpg

Currently seeing if Toyota will cover mine (doubt it). If not, it's rust-oleum and touch up paint for me!

I've thought about it, but honestly, I don't see the need. When the body shop took my trim off to take photos, it didn't appear to me that it would have made a difference. My guess is somehow road salt ended up getting under the trim. My driver's side has it, the passenger side less, and none at all on the rear. Maybe I'll change my mind though.

For anyone who has fixed this themselves, what's the process for removing the plastic sill cover and weather stripping? My 2016 started showing rust under the sill protector in 2018 and it's growing slowly, I should have brought it to Toyota sooner but life is busy sometimes. I'm going to bring mine in for them to look at, but mentally prepping for trying to do the repair myself. The rust removal/primer/paint/new sill part I'm fine with, just not sure on the weather stripping more than anything.

I do have the extended warranty and am only at 53k miles, so maybe it's covered there. Car is in Maine and dark grey, for what it's worth

I noticed my 2017 had he same rust problem on driver door sill.I took it to dealer in sept and they took pics but never got back to me. I called and they say the pics were bad? They told me to take to there body shop for new pics and appraisal so I did. Went back to dealer yesterday for cab mounted brake light seal recall and had time to face to face with manager about rust and she said they denied it! Said my truck vin wasn't covered,I said BS and pulled it up on my phone and she finally came back to me and said they would take care of it even thou my warrantee just expired. I reminded her I was there in Sept when it was under warrantee. Bottom line is they tried to get out of it! Now they say its going to take 5 days to repair but they may have a rental car if needed but they are very limited.
Can I get the check for appraised value and fix myself? I'm retired and can sand, prime and paint

I've taken it apart to run wires, not for the rust repair... The plastic cover just pulls straight up, and the weather stripping can be pulled off of the seam.

about a month ago, I took my '17 in for 60k service and complained about the paint blistering on the sill, mostly occurring @ the drivers door. To my surprise, Toyota warrantied it, and had the dealer fix it. They had the truck for over a week - the dealer provided a rental... I was pleasantly surprised to get it done under warranty.
