Yes I've heard of this TSB that revises the recommended air pressure settings on tires in order to match the tires the truck was sold with.

We did have some 32 F and below weather here in central california last winter, but I don't remember hearing knocking/pinging. Hopefully someone who lives in a consistently colder climate can chime in.

A friend of mine told me that the knocking in cold weather is usually because the fuel is low in octane or there is ethanol present. He told me to run 93 octane and after a few fill-ups the ecu will adjust and knocking should go away. So this may be unrelated to this thread. I did call the dealership back and the service tech told me to bring the truck by and leave it for a day so they could cold start it but with the temps currently being in the 60's and 70's it might be a waste of time. I think I'll wait and see what happens this winter. It will still be under warranty then.

Well I had the TSB performed, and leaving the dealership going up the same hill there was no pinging present. We'll see how things go as I drive it more.

Normally I run 89 octane fuel that's E10, but lately I've been filling up more with 87 No Ethanol from a small gas station by my house. Usually that'll mix with the 89 E10. The last two fill ups have been with 87 No ethanol so that was primarily what was in my tank at the time I noticed the ping. For purposes of consistency, I'll fill up the next two times with the same stuff. Gas mileage, I'll admit I don't go as hardcore in calculating it as some members do, but it's been in the 17-18mpg range thru out numerous fill ups. I'll see if I notice a change with that as well.

OK , so after reading through 220 posts , Here is another kicker .
This TSB also fixes rough shifting on the automatics as it upshifts into fifth gear .
The TSB was released in 2012 but older trucks are also having the problem . There is a huge post about clunky transmissions . This TSB seems to fix the issue up by delaying the shift points to alleviate such load on the engine .

A big thanks to Rambone for bringing the technical service bulletin into the picture . That really helped . He deserves some points for this http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/member.php?u=137211

Double check your mileage before and after you have this TSB performed .

Also keep in mind that these are adaptive transmissions so if you ask the dealer to do a manual reset on the adaptive learn it makes a huge difference and feels like a new trans....

Happy to report I took my truck through the mountains all weekend and didn't have a single issue on all the hills, switchbacks, and higher elevations.

Just had the TSB preformed on my 13 TRD OR. Whoo hoo ! no more pinging. Here in Austin TX its over 90 most of the year. I would hear it all time time now after the TSB have not heard a single ping. The engine just seems more refined and more smooth hard to describe but defiantly an improvement. Waiting to see if the MPG is affected after a few tanks.

tried to have it done on my truck via oxnard toyota. Made appointment confirmed that if i showed up they were going to do it without issue.

Showed up and the guy was like yeah i cant do it unless its pinging. (it was 68* out and my truck doesnt ping in the first place i want this tsb done for the smoother motor, preventative maintenance from pinging in the future and slightly different shift points) Then he goes and tells me, they just did this tsb on a previous tacoma and they ended up bricking the ECU and had to order a new ECU.... at that point i told him, you guys will never work on my truck, give me my keys back and thanks for wasting my time.

i swear the dealers here in Ventura County are horrible.

i have tried that shit before.... honestly for that its not worth my time... i fought with toyota corporate over a much bigger issue i had at Ventura Toyota and got a bed mat out of it.... but beyond that no thanks.

Going to call thousand oaks toyota tomorrow and make an appointment to drop my truck off.

yup, i actually sat there in the service area drop off for your truck and called another dealer in the area and got the scoop on if thousand oaks can do it, and they said they could but if they couldnt replicate the issue they would need to contact toyota cooperate to have it done and would likely be approved to do it. I gotta call them again and sort out details of giving them my truck for the day and making sure they actually do it.

Play them the sound clip I posted on page 5. My buddy could never get his truck to ping at the dealer so he played it for them and they did the tsb right there. If you want I can send you the clip.

2013 DCSB Baja, picked it up in March 2013 adn I have 33,000 miles on it.
I started to notice the pinging last year when I was on my way back to New Orleans from NW PA. It came and went, so did not worry about it. I had my 30,000 done about 3 weeks ago @ 29,480 and then went up to Atlanta and I noticed it right out the gate esp as the route got a little hilly, between 1100 and 2000 rpm and figured that maybe they cleaned the MAF sensor at the 30K service, returned back to the flat land and jsut occassionally I would hear it. Went back up to Atlanta and it was back, but louder, to the point where I was creeping along in traffic and on every partial throttle application under any load it would ping, so I called the dealership that has done all my work and too it in last Friday. Went out with the tech and he noticed it a couple of times and put it up on the rack and checked for loose heat shields etc, but nothing and told me that it would have logged codes if it was pinging....It doesnt seem to matter what the temp is outside as it pings every morning around 0500 when I get off the interstate and go up a ramp under very small throttle openings.
The tech also told me that maybe the throttle body needed cleaning.
I have had this serviced religiously and all filters have been changed.
Thanks for posting this TSB and I will get this done hopefully today.
I am averaging 16.8 MPG and have tracked my mpg for 20K.
    We will see. :spy:

You're welcome. From your description, it appears like you're a good candidate for this TSB. I'm at 1000+ miles now after having the TSB performed, and so far, I haven't heard the pinging/thwacking noise return. It doesn't quite run as smooth now on 87 as it did on 93 premium, but I have no doubt that 98% of the problem has been corrected. I'm happy to be be back to running regular unleaded 87 fuel...:D $$$$ savings...

I am getting this done on Monday, so why do you need to have the transmission manually reset? I know nothing about these things...
