Had it done this morning. No pinging, at all so far. Was almost on empty when they did it, so have a full tank now and will see. They also did the tyre B-pillar sticker upgrade.
It may just be me, but I swear my truck is quieter now. I have the TRD Cat back exhaust on it and at the lights I thought the truck had stalled, but nope, just idling quietly.
Anyway I have around 4 to 5 thousand miles to put on between now and mid December and will cover from LA to PA to SC to LA to GA to SC and back home LA...
    Will update

I had my dealer perform the update. Yes, the motor runs a bit smoother, and there is a small to moderate increase in torque while the tranny is in 5th gear. However, the biggest gain in overall power has been combining the tsb with a complete full tank of 93 octane. I would welcome a tune that allows a bit more torque down low, but in my opinion, high test makes the tsb worth while.

One other thing; I have onlly ever used 87 octane. With the miles I put on, running 93 would put a big dent in my beer and TW cash money...

Have you noticed if the transmission now shifts a little smoother on initial start up ? We are looking for a smooth shift into 5th gear while the engine is cool

From memory - yes - the transmission shifts smoother when fluids/components are cool after having this tsb performed.

I'm at +1500 miles after having this tsb performed, and previous enging pinging noises are still subdued drastically. Even so, my "smooth as butter" shifting transmission has "relearned" itself into shifting not quite as smoothly as right after the TSB was performed. Hmm.

I had this TSB performed today. On the way home I did not notice any pinging at all. I am hoping that this takes care of the issue. Time will tell.

Brought the TSB in to the dealer, told my service guy what was going on and he said no problem, and got the TSB done in no time.

Ok, have run about 450 miles since this was done. Pinging pretty much gone. The shifting is silky smooth esp. 4th to 5th.
Have picked up 1.5 mpg on the tank after the TSB
So far, well worth getting done.

Yeah, they have a new sticker to overlay the original tyre info on the B pillar. Apparently its im-pot-tant....
I actually got a letter from Toyota with that in it as well, on Thursday.

Have driven my Tacoma a bit since the TSB last week.

    1) no more pinging
    2) it definitely shifts more smoothly when accelerating
    3) I gained just over 1 mpg in fuel efficiency.

The best part is that I no longer have to put premium gas in it to reduce the pinging. I am very happy with the results. I love my truck again.

OK, that sounds exactly like what mine is doing. Glad to know what it is so I can tell the techs at dealer. Thank you so much for posting this video. I tried to record one from inside the truck while driving and you can't hear it very well on the phone, the recording sucks. This recording was great, Thanks again so so so much, and to everybody else for their input. What a great forum.

Three tanks since the TSB update. Picked up an extra 1 mpg even in the city. Smooth transmission shifts and the truck even sounds so much better with the TRD cat back exhaust, alot more mellow, which I like.
    Very happy with the update.

I would like to see this TSB covering some of the earlier models as well , not just 2012 and up .
my 2010 has a slight ping and the transmission clunks into 5th when cold .
Considering the tsb seems to fix both complaints , I wonder what the difference is between 2012 and earlier ecm calibration ?

afaik they changed to a newer ecu on the 2012+'s hence why URD cant get the connector for it (and why it also has the smog pump) epa bs as usual.

that stated they should be able to fix it regardless of truck as its just an ecu flash.

What do you mean by this? That they can reflash a 2010?

yeah, they can reflash any year, they have to do it for supercharger installs. that stated they dont have a new flash for the older ecu's to solve this problem.
