Makes sense. How do we determine the actual ECU programming changes that affected by this TSB? It seems like we would need to find out pre-TSB calibration settings in the ECU, then have the TSB peformed, and chart the settings again. Compare before/after?

Too bad the TSB doesn't state the actual parameters being modified as part of the re-calibration. It bums me out when manufacturers hold back on diverging important information.

2012 and I have spark knock most of the time. I have been running 87. Hate the thought of a flash but sounds like going to a higher grade doesn't completely eliminate it in all cases. Scheduled an appointment for a couple weeks. Will check back here for follow up.

at least it is a fast procedure. 0.4 hours max

I too am awaiting results from the daring....my taco is gonna be fine ping or no ping
but would be nice to get rid of most or all if it

the change can't be too severe as it is still CARB approved

no kidding. with modern engine management but no 'CARB to-the-letter restrictions' we'd all have 50 mpg 300HP machines on pump gas

I'm interested to see the results of POST-TSB. My '12 is at 34k miles now......approaching the 3yrs/36k miles warranty quick.

Yes. it pings on 89 octane at the sweet spot (~1500 rpm and 43-48 mph).

I have a feeling that quite a few people will have this TSB performed. Even so, you never know. I know of a certain air bag TSB that should have been performed so my old F-150's air bag would work & not kill me when it went off....aaaand I never had that TSB performed before the truck was junked.

Sub, been running high octane for several tanks now, very few instances of pinging on step grades in a high gear. Filled up a few weeks ago with 87 and pinging immediately came back. I've also noticed that even on 91 when wot on a hot day the truck sounds terrible. I hope to have an apt next week to have these issue checked out. If they offer to do this tsb I'll question what changes it makes and let them do it to see if it makes any changes.

I just had this TSB done Friday morning, it took less than an hour to complete. I have had my truck just over a year now and almost from day one have run premium gas due to this issue. Premium gas did not take away the pinging completely though. Since having it done, granted its only been a few days, i have not heard it at all. I have taken out my 3000lb camper for a test run, as thats when i would hear it the most, and so far nothing to hear, the problem seems to be gone.

Well here we go! Here is the first report.

Did the tech mention anything about what settings were being changed?

Did you fill up with regular-grade fuel before bringing the truck in to show them the severity of the pinging?

Since you had the chance to bring the camper out for a test run, did you notice any differences in horsepower/torque? I understand the possibility of the placebo affect playing a role in each individual person's response to questions like this.

Thank you for reporting back! :)

Techs most likely arnt going to know what's been changed and if it affected hp or mileage toyota would have to disclose that type of info by law. I've done several reprograms at work and I have no idea what's actually being change I just know what is ring fix and speculate. But like I said if it will affect advertised numbers they have to tell you.

What is probably being changed is base spark timing and phaser calibration to match the new spark maps and that's probably all. It will still run the same and adjust just as much but it's starting point to do so is at a different point if that makes any sense. Just my speculation though

Interested to see results as I get some ping when under hard acceleration. Wondering if they have a new flash for S/C'd engines.

They weren't aware of what the changes actually are only that it was a software update and I was on my 3rd tank of regular grade gas so it was pinging pretty good. When I took out the camper there was no noticeable difference in horsepower or torque nor did it affect my anticipated milage. So far problem seems to be gone without further issues to my truck.
