Interesting input. I've never heard of this piezo device. I've always assumed that there is some type of a sending unit or sensor that detects a knock/ping. It would be interesting to test part of your theory by replacing this sensor (if it is, indeed, replaceable). If it is, instead, a calibration sensitivity issue, a replacement wouldn't fix the problem.

    TRD Exhaust,
It's beginning to warm up here and hit over 86 degrees last week, figured I'd give an update since it was done in October last year. There is no noticeable knocking or pinging still, the shifting strategy has been completely relearned and I can say everywhere from grandma driving to full throttle the shifts are great. Over all I'm seeing 19.9 on average for my mileage for my very short trip to and from work, I did take it on the highway for an extended drive but I was not driving conservatively.

I've been searching for a TSB on this very issue! I love TW.
I just went in for this today. The girl at the counter initially said they would have to re-create the sound on a test drive. After waiting almost 2 hours for a tech to be available for the test drive, she comes over to me and said "The tech was immediately aware of this issue as soon as i handed him your TSB printout" (which i got from this thread - thank you very much!). He has completed the TSB.
I don't have much to report yet. I just left the dealer, picked up my son, and came home. Only about 5 miles total so far, but I will update when I get more miles on her.

I have not seen a single post in this thread on a 2015 Tacoma. Is that because they have already done the new program on the 2015's at the factory. Thanks.

I had the recal done and I am 100% happy.
No power change, no fuel mileage change and no more ping with Costco 87 gas.

All Tacomas produced after July 2014 have the recal.

    Nice. That was quick. Thanks.

Now I guess that I need to decide what octane gas to run.

    ------------IT WORKS NO PINGS ANYWHERE-----------------------

got TSB done on my 2013 which would ping up hills and highway on ramps

now...it did ping just ONE TIME (well, a series of pings) but just once like it did before on this one spot on a hill at 30mph... my local hill.... a month ago

now, no more pinging anywhere, even on 'Das Hill' and the tranny shifts smoother everywhere (and shifts more often instead of lugging at low throttle inputs)

    perfect !

Dealer said they did mine, have receipt that shows reflash but they did not install the sticker. Question is... and honestly I don't really care if there is a sticker or not but is it something that NEEDS to be on there?

I haven't noticed any further pinging. Of course it's become winter here again  (in the middle of April) so no warm days to really put it to the test.

Does Toyota run the 4.0 V6 in any other vehicles? If no, does that mean that when the last 2015 rolls off of the line, that's the end of the 4.0

Kind of sad for such a proven, reliable workhorse.

federal US Emission regulations require any factory done modifications to the vehicle to be represented by a sticker in specific locations. just a sticker saying what code update was installed is fine.

so yeah maybe by giving you a service receipt with the software update performed is enough for them, but a EPA sticker is required..same as changing the load or weight it needs to be on door jamb sticker that vehicle load capacity has changed by +- X amount.

hassle them until they come up with a sticker, or ignore it. it just a CYA for toyota corp.

So how loud or noticeable is the pinging? I hear some small tapping sound at a certain rpm under load, but I can't tell if it's from the engine or from under the truck. I've been driving like this for over 15k miles.

I haven't posted on TW about this issue until now, but my '13 DCSB started pinged badly at about 15k miles. Mine would ping no matter the temp or incline. It would ping every time when accelerating from a stop or increasing speed. It would even ping at higher RPM's when the tranny would downshift. I took it to the dealer once before seeing this TSB and was told nothing was wrong even though I drove it with the service manager and he admitted hearing the pinging. I took it in again with TSB in hand and they performed the reflash and it seemed to work for about a week. It didn't ping quite as badly but still a lot more than just the typical 1500 RPMs most on here are reporting. Took it to two dealerships and was told there was nothing they could do. I dealt with it along with other unfixed issues I had with the truck for another 6 months and decided enough was enough. I just felt like I got a 'bad' one and after speaking with the GM at the dealership, I was handed an offer I couldn't refuse and traded the '13 for a '15. I'm a happy camper. The '15 sounds better, drives better, quieter, is smoother and overall just feels like a better truck than my '13 ever did. I hope the rest of you that had this done have better long term results than I did.

Thanks for the info, I too have a 13 that pings no matter what on low grade fuel, even 89. With 93 octane its smooth and sounds great.

I still have a ping after the TSB regardless of octane. The truck is so loud in general and the slight ping still annoys me. Next oil change I'm going to have them listen again and take note.
