My truck started pinging badly this week now that the weather has warmed up. Its always done it a little bit but now it sounds like my engine is filled with marbles. I'm at 17,000 miles. Its going into the dealer tomorrow for the TSB work. Hopefully it fixes the problem but I am concerned about any long term effects this pinging may have caused to the engine. Does anyone know if this will shorten the engine life? I liked this truck when I first bought it and planned on keeping it for many years but its starting to become a POS and its only 9 months old.

it won't shorten engine life at all, this TSB sets the PCM/ECU program that toyota should have set up
in the ECU. it's a bugfix really. my 2013 runs super sweet and never pings anymore

Did everyone get the sticker under the hood after having the TSB done, like it says in the TSB for the dealer to do?

I didn't, but my experience with the dealership was beyond horrible, so I don't even want to go back for it. Does it matter for anything as long as I know it was done?

The dealer I went to performed the TSB, but didn't put the sticker on either. When I called in the other day to ask about recalls, they said there was one for the sticker under the hood. They are replacing the clear plastic guard on the lower part of the truck, so when I go in, I'll just have them put the sticker on. It's probably not a big deal if you don't get it, it's probably more for Toyota than anything.

What is the TSB for that "electronic brake work"?

not a TSB it's an actual safety recall

if your VIN shows up as affected on toyota recall site your brake controller and VSC/Trac is reprogrammed

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...y-recall-brake-actuator-reprogramming.324219/

Now all it means is the truck may default to ordinary brake mode, (old skool like we learned back in the day) and not have the skid control ECU handle braking for you. So it is kind of a minor thing but statistics show the skid control/vsc/trac can save yer arse on many situations...this makes sure it doesn't crap out on you unexpectedly

I had the TSB ECU update done this morning. The pinging seems to be gone. Hopefully it stays that way. Also they didn't put a sticker under the hood.

On the lower part of the door panel, there is a clear-ish film on the bottom part of the door that helps protect against rocks, etc. Mine is peeling a little, so they are replacing it. Basically, it runs from the crease in the door down to the lower part of the door. It looks like orange peel, but its a clear liner that protects the paint.

Most dealerships stopped ordering these stickers years ago and are relying on reading the ECU firmware version directly instead. Less error-prone.

Update. I had this tsb done around a year ago, and with the warmer weather, it has started to ping again, just not as long. It's not as bad as with the A/C on, but during the summer, I'm afraid I'm gonna "have a lot of pingin' goin on". Between the brake clacking sound and this pinging, I'm about to pull my hair out. :annoyed:

I'm done feeding mine premium, it ran smooth on it but at 13-14 avg mpg it had to go. I'm now have a 4runner avg 17-18 and no pinging on the cheapest gas I could find. I also needed more cabin room with now a third along for the ride.

Fwiw, I think the pinging is caused by carbon buildup. I ran some sea foam through and it seemed to make it better, although not perfect. I may so a few more treatments of sea foam to see if I can flush everything out.

TSB done. No more pinging and MPG went from 14 to 16.
