yes the trans learns how you drive. A disconnect of the battery resets this back to its default state.

The TSB has done nothing for shift points. But it does seem like it stays locked up in 5th slightly longer with more throttle input which is a good thing. That stated at 32mph under light throttle input the trans will try to do 5th lockup regardless, its how its coded.

If the TSB doesn't change the shift points, how come people are saying it makes the 4-5 shift smoother? I notice my 4-5 shift is rough under light throttle when it shifts at sub-1,500 RPM but if I get on it a bit more and it's above 2,000 RPM it shifts fine.

It has to do something about the lockup points, at a minimum, I'd think. I'm going to fight for this at my next oil change. I am going nuts with the constant locking and unlocking of my converter every time I'm on/off the gas.

You shouldn't have to fight to have this TSB performed. Print the TSB, bring it with you when you talk to the service writer face to face, and be patient/kind but firm in the fact that you want it performed under the 8x,xxx mile emissions warranty period. You should be fine. If you absolutely need to, appeal to the service manager.

I think it has something to do with how power comes on after the TSB. The only shifting difference i have noticed is the fact that it will stay in lockup longer. Meaning it could possibly be making a little more power at less throttle input to allow me not to have to push the accelerator down to a point where the trans goes... ok he wants the next gear.

for me it drops to 4th sooner, and stays in 4th longer, for fixed throttle position on a hill
I drive daily... steep, around 30 mph, and in D

    Do you have a ScanGauge?

I notice driving in 4 raising my transmission temp compared to OD so I was curious what you've seen.

probably because you are not in lockup in 4th.

Most likely. It's incredibly difficult to get it to lock in 4th. I see a lot of members here advocating driving around town in 4 to alleviate the issues these trucks have, but seeing transmission temps rise so much always make me nervous.

Put the trans in 4th, it should lockup rather quick.

I don't see it doing it. I mean, sometimes I've gotten it to do it, but I have to be on a dead flat road with absolutely no modulation of the throttle. Regardless, typically the second I go in 4th, I watch my transmission temps go up 10-20 degrees (I believe I'm seeing converter temp as the pan temp wouldn't fluctuate that fast).

yeah if you are seeing 10-20 deg swings in a few seconds that converter output temp for sure. I have watch converter output temps shoot 40* and pan temps only go up 5

Its harder to tell 4th lockup vs 5th lockup because in 4th you are closer to the stall rpm of the torque converter so the difference in rpms lockup makes isnt as much as it would be in 5th.

I have a 12 off road and as far as I know I don't have pinging running 87. I also have no idea what pinging sounds like. I've printed out the TSB but don't know if I should try to have this done. Since it's only a software update wouldn't it be a improvement or could it make my truck ping.

Hi - all good questions. If I were you, I'd probably bring the printed TSB to your service manager to show him you're aware of the potential problem. This will give you a chance to have it performed, or at least set a point that he and you can look back on and reference if you need to perform it at a later date.

If you want to have it performed, we have seen no negative effects so far. I've had the TSB on my truck for 50,000 miles now.

I haven't seen any changes in mpg due to the TSB. I've had it done for ~25,000 miles now. The biggest change in mpg I've noted is due to change from stock dunflop tires to Cooper Discoverer AT3 265/75-16s P-rated. ~18 avg mpg is now ~16.5 (it's also possible that my foot got heavier over time...more skinny pedal :D)

Mine is a 2011 Tacoma and not adjustable from what I've been told. I've started running 89 & 93 Octane from Chevron & Texeco. I had been running 87 from the cheapest place in town, Typically Wal-Mart or Raceway. Change in fuel over the last 10 tankful so or so seem to have made a difference. Clearly not as bad as it was, but will see as the weather heats up and humidity increases. Poorest its ever run was in the July-August, 95+ Degrees with 100% Humidity.

Still no pings or issues since I had the TSB performed. I've always ran either running 89 octane or 90 octane No Ethanol.

I live in CO and have never had an issue with any of my non-turbo vehicles (except for a high compression v6 I once had) with running 85.

My 2013 Taco on the other hand was a pinging machine. Onramp, going up hills, etc. It got much worse with a lift kit and topper....

    Today they flashed the truck..

All I have to say is holy shit..... No idea the 4.0 would run that quiet. Zero pings on 85 here. (i'll prob step up to 91 as the service manager said it will run better on 91)

Just an FYI if you have a 12' or 13' do this. no brainer. easy.
