My first tank after the TSB was exactly the same as it was prior. I will report back it that changes.

Hot and humid today, the exact conditions that the problem is the most severe. Only once did it ping, 2nd to 3rd, low rpms, incline, seemed as thou it quickly corrected the problem. Before and after this the truck ran as it should, if not better. Maybe in all my head but it seems to run smoother now and not as bogged down when the a/c is on.

Also I should mention, that I work out of my vehicle, 40-60 miles a day at this time. I do 20-25 stops a day if not more and only turn the truck off a few times a day. In other words, my info comes from being in my truck 4-5 days a week, 6 to 7 hrs a day.

Since TSB I've driven 51 miles, worked just over 6hrs, stopped @ 23 places, and truck was turned off twice. Tomorrow will be a day similar if not less, then the truck is heading to OBX sat morning. I'll be sure to post if any pinging occurs.

After 4 weeks of driving since having the TSB done my truck is running a lot smoother. I have tried to make it knock/ping but can't. I've driven to Chicago and back with no issue and pulled a trailer with two polaris rangers that would normally cause it to sound like the engine was going to explode. I can definitely feel more power in every gear and the transmission seems to shift smoother then before. My gas mileage has gone up from 16-17 to 19-20. I've been running 87 octane with no problems. The temps here in Indy have been around the 90's with 80% humidity. If you are having trouble getting your truck to ping for the dealer play them the audio from my earlier post (I think it's on page 5) My buddy did this at the dealer as his would only ping/knock every once in a while and the tech did the flash right there.

Update: got my truck back late last night, just before the dealer closed. My service tech said he was on the phone off and on most of the day with Toyota and they ended up telling him that in the manual it states that some knocking, while accelerating or driving up hill, is normal, and that the manual also states using Top Tier fuel is recommended. Guess what type of fuel has been run in my truck since day one, Top Tier, and I have all my receipts to show that. My service tech then told Toyota that my complaint was mostly while towing not normal driving which lead to a long hold on the phone and now Toyota says they will get back to the service tech by Tuesday with an answer. My service tech and the service manager have refused to close my work order at this point as they both feel this is not normal for my engine to be operating this way. They have told me to sit tight and they will get this figured out, however they still feel that the plugs are too hot for the motor causing the pre-detonation, thats why when I use a higher octane fuel the problems mostly goes away. I guess I will have to wait a few more days while they try to figure this all out.

At the dealer getting this done right now. It hasn't been pinging much lately so I was worried they might not do the fix. The tech was super cool and said he heard a little knock and would do the fix.

Good suggestions & thank you for the feedback. I'm still trying to make it to the dealer for this TSB. Keep us updated =).

It's always nice to have the dealer on your side. I'm glad to hear they are taking this seriously, and not shrugging off the issue as "normal." Good dealer by the sound of it. Please let us know what comes of this.

Sounds like you're also working with a good dealer. Good news. Let us know how she behaves post TSB =).

    Update:

Drove it around town after the TSB and then drove back into work. My engine is smoother and quieter than it's ever been. So that's only about 35 miles since the flash, I'll post again if I notice anything negative.

Some of you are having a hard time getting your dealer to perform the TSB? I went and said the engine in my brand new truck is knocking. Please perform TSB 0044-14. They said ok.

I'm hoping the same happens with me. I plan to ask them to do it when they do the free service in a few weeks.

I thought that I would post a little update. So far, I have about 75 miles on the TSB tune. The engine seems to run a bit smoother & not quite as loud as before. I am unsure of the MPG change as I only have driven 75 or so miles since the TSB was performed. Can't really comment on 87 octane as I had 93 octane in my tank before the tsb. Time will tell & I'll continue update as I put more miles on it, but it seems promising.

Tank #2 of 87 octane, 600 miles since TSB. Mid-90 temps last week. NO pinging whatsoever, mileage unchanged 18.5-19.5 hand calculated.

So I finally heard back from my service tech and he told me due to the software update my trucks computer needed to re-learn my driving habits and that included towing. Once the TSB software update was done, as far as my truck knew, it had never towed anything or been drove. I thought that was a bunch of BS, however, since pulling my camper just over 100 miles it now runs much smoother. No pinging under normal driving nor towing. I am leaving Saturday, towing my camper about 3800 miles, so I guess I will find out whether or not it stays this way. I will update after my trip to let you all know.
