Received a call back from Aron, Case Manager for Toyota Corporate about the u-joint clunk when slowing and engine surge during idle in drive and reverse. I was told they won't be able to assist me with either repair or replacement of my truck since they learned I previously owned a 2010,11 and 14 Tacoma and my expectations will be different then how this truck was designed and I must try harder to make an adjustment. You can't make this stuff up!!! I'll be honest, I was prepared to respond to several different responses but that one never crossed my mind. I was also told there no fix in the near future for the low speed hard downshift causing the u-joint noise, just a characteristic of the beast owners must try harder to understand. I never knee jerk but been a faithful Toyota owner since 2010 and I think this chapter is closed.

Did they offer any information on what is causing the clunk? Sounds like a BS answer that they don't know what is causing the problem or that the fix is more than they want to deal with. I guess they expect us to replace u joints in the future on our tab. They should at least offer a warranty extension on the u joints. I guess I'll be hearing the same answer on my case. This reminds me of the time when I had a Ford Mustang. I had huge problems with the transmission and the torque converter Ford totally denied anything was wrong with the car and that it was characteristic. I had that car in the shop for nine months more than I drove it. I finally got frustrated with the car and sold it and lost my shirt on it. Four years later Ford came out with a recall on the transmission.

I wish there was some sort of advocacy group that we could contact to put pressure on Toyota to fix these trucks or we could form a class action lawsuit against Toyota to get these trucks fixed! How ridiculous is this to be spending time on brand new vehicles that we all spent hard-earned money on expecting to have a Dependable reliable vehicle because of it being a Toyota. And most people on here are returning Toyota customers. They certainly marketed all of us to purchase their vehicle and now they won't stand behind their product.

Why did you have 4 different trucks in the span of 6 years? That's a lot. That's not a legit reason for them to decline responsibility, but seriously that's what they said?

Recently had TSB-0171-12 Rev 2 applied to my 2017 DCSB SR5 4wd Tacoma. Noticeable improvement in shifting. Much smoother and more responsive. I was skeptical about applying the TSB, but after a long road trip with pronounced lag in shifting uphill, decided to take it in and get it done with the 5K service. Glad I did. Drives like I would expect it to.

This is the first line of BS defense and you have to escalate it.

    Jim_Lentz@toyota.com

Email him and tell him you are a long time toyota customer and you are very disappointed. You want to remain loyal but have been brushed off by corp...

I did that and its been a pain but I got 125k bumper to bump warranty and a case open incase they never fix it, then you can lemon it

Oh they know how long I have been a loyal customer because they mentioned it when the case was opened. I could care less about extended warranty but a life insurance policy may be more appropriate with the surging! Lol.

I actually had a friend who was a General Manager for a Toyota dealer. I moved up into a better model for very little, never had a vehicle hold their value like a Tacoma and with a little help selling them below invoice it worked out pretty good. The 2010 was a base 4cylinder and the 2011 was a 4 cylinder four door SR5. However, The 2014 Tacoma SR5 four door 4.0 IMO was best overall. I regret trading it often but did like the appearance and more civilian drivabilty of the 2016 until experiancing the issues. Yes, that is what I was told with several Im sorrys.

So after a week of tsb update and driving my normal routine the truck is definitely better. More responsive around town. Out on the interstate the truck actually uses 5th gear now which is great. The truck use to go from 6th to 4th then to 5th rapidly when trying to hold speeds going up small inclines. Now it goes to 5th unless 4th is absolutely necessary. Plus my average mpg went from low 18 to mid 19s for the tank. Glad I got it done and hope it sticks.

    See my sig for mods
After calling Toyota Corp. up and complaining about the trans shifting and the possibility of the trans being low on trans fluid they started a case number, and I had the T-SB-0077-16 performed on my 17 SR5 at the dealer I bought it from, Carson City Toyota which gave me absolutely no crap about it.

They inspected the trans fluid and found it to be low, and after having both of these issues addressed the trans shifted noticeably better and continued to improve the more I drove it. So when I took the truck in for the free 5000 mile service I told the service writer about what I already had them do to the trans, and although the trans was working fairly well, I asked him what is the T-SB-0077-16 Rev 1 address over the T-SB-0077-16.

He said that he didn’t know but would ask the head of service dept about it when he got in. So I was sitting in the lounge when the service writer came in and asked me if I wanted to have the T-SB-0077-16 Rev 1 done on my truck and I told him definitely, as I said that it had to be an improvement over the first update, and they didn't even take the truck out to see how it was currently shifting like they did before they installed the T-SB-0077-16 update.

They had my truck for a total of about 2 ½ hours, and on the drive home I noticed even more improvement in the trans, and I could tell that the shift points were different and better as well as the overall response of the truck. I had to drive back up to Carson City yesterday to do some shopping which is a round trip of 150 miles from where I live in northern NV, and the trans is working really nice now and I’m very happy with it, and I hit 24+ mpg coming back home doing 75+ mph.

Just as I experienced with the first trans update, I assume that the more I drive the truck the more the trans is going to improve with the new update. So with 5488 miles on the truck, I am very happy with it now and I have not had any other problems with it.

my truck has gotten worst since the tsb update. How do I tell if I got the tsb Rev 1 software or not? From reading on page 1, there's two that are tsb-0077-16 with one being the Rev 1 . On my work order it on show tsb-0077-16 but I don't see Rev 1. I'm thinking I got the old version since it runs like shit now.
