It is not normal. It is normal for a faulty transmission. You are not alone. There are many with the exact same problem. One member made a case for a leaky valve body due to faulty part fitment. The TSB Rev1 code tried to cover up the root cause. You have a bad transmission. Fight strong.

My " Case Manager " just called me back...said Toyota IS working on updates for the trucks. She said it could up to 6 mos for us to see anything. She said the transmission havent fully learned our driving patterns until 10,000 miles. Don't shoot the messenger.....

So there's not a 2nd TSB out for the trans yet? My dealer said they're only aware of rev 1. I've got to drive out a ways to get to another dealer, don't mind if there's a rev 2 I can get.

Technically there was a TSB "Rev 0" and then a "Rev 1" came out, never figured out if Rev 1 was a new version or if it just included more symptoms to be included for the fix....

Rev 1 included code to mask of the 3-4 gear shift flare.

Ok, So in followup to this post: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/t-sb-0077-16-rev-1.457782/page-127#post-15658951
I did get out onto some back road highway time the other day and tested how the TRD performs with the cruise control on with regards going up a slight incline and shifting if necessary down to a lower gear. The cruise control was set to 57mph. When going up a small incline, it reacted a little faster than I had previously, but the engine still reved up and I couldn't tell if it went into 5th or 4th before going back into 6th gear. On the return back I turned off the cruise control and drove like I normally do. Bottom line is I think this TRD could defiantly benefit from T-SB-0077-16-REV-1.

On a side note, when driving around town, (starting at a stop lite and going up to the speed limit of 50), gears 1 thru 4 appear to shift perfectly and at the right time, speed and rpm, and and some times 5th is at the right time and place also, BUT 6th gear seems to come too soon - it seems to engage at too low of an rpm, and if I'm still needing my speed to increase a little more, 6th gear seems to struggle at its rpm level, bogs the truck down forcing me to press harder on the gas pedal which causes the truck to gear down, rev up unnecessarly to get that last 3 or 4 mph.

When driving on 25 to 40 mph roads I use "S" mode and stay mostly in 5th and 4th gear / 1000 to 1700 rpm, and the gas economy bar stays mostly pegged at 30, and average fuel per mile is in the 21.4 to 22.4 range.

In regular transmission driving, 6th gear comes into play at too low of a speed and rpm, and 5 gear doesn't reach quite high enough.

Edited due to lightning storm and I pressed send before proof reading, so as to be able to unplug computer.

    END of my opinion. :)

That's the right strategy. I filed a case on the lack of greaseable u-joints on 16 and 17s, and they are sending it to engineering. Should be a war between the bean counters and engineering. May not be resolved, but interesting to watch unfold.

Got a call back from my case manager today (reported first of last week, call back next day, and got call back for final decision 2 days later).

I explained on the initial call that I was not happy and did not have faith in the product that I purchased. I explained that I keep my vehicles for 10+ years and given the fact it has had multiple "major" recalls already, that I did not have faith that I could depend on this vehicle for such a timeframe.

He stated he would get back with me...not short or curt but at the time did not say much more. I went along with it and was polite about it.

He called me back 2 days later and explained that they are working on a further release of software and that he would also offer me an 8 year/125K mile warranty.

    Thx

You will get results. You will need to be unwavering and professional. Escalate if your results are not satisfactory. You are not alone. Toyota is well aware of the defects in these transmissions.

My service person at Toyota Customer Service said August/September but someone above had a rep tell them "up to 6 months." I guess the good news is that they seem to be hearing that enough owners are still having trans problems.

My service manager told me last week it's especially hard to get a transmission revision after those MPG numbers are set in stone with the government....I guess all the people that monitor that stuff.

He didn't think there would be another one but I'm hoping he's wrong!

If there is no change in the functional code blocks that define the EPA regulated combustion, then it should not be too bad. For example, code that purges an air bubble in a valve body (the added code in "Rev1"), to get rid of a 3rd to 4th gear shift flare, Should not be too bad to get an EPA release. Changing load shift points would be entirely different. A lot of the transmission problems were due to a $&@!ed up valve body, and that is why all of the transmission revs came out. Remember the park to drive delay? That was the first of many code patches. I am very familiar with the Rev1 version. It was my transmission they used to write the code against.

It wasn't worth waiting on Toyota to release another weak attempt at an update when we have OVTune taking care of business turning our trucks into exactly what they should have been.

Is OVTune changing the transmission operation as well?
