Mine hunts all the time since the flash and I've had consistently worse mileage to the tune of 2-3 mpg ever since because of this. I posted this after I had it done, but everyone else called it a miracle cure :)

    Basic overland stuff...
Thanks for the info. I've been plagued by a similar issue.

On the highway the truck will downshift into 4th and hang there. No matter what! I can release all throttle and just feather the gas and it'll still hang and not upshift. I could hold 4th until redline if I wanted. Cresting a hill and starting downhill wouldn't even allow an upshift. I either had to wait and wait or just flip it into sport and upshift it.

Freaking crazy. I love the truck but Toyota has completely missed the boat with this transmission / motor combo. I'm glad our '16 4Runner still has the 4.0!

I'm hesitant to get this one since the last one worked wonders. I'm worried it will screw it up again.

Hmmm, I am scheduled for tomorrow to have the update done. I'm thinking I'll either be totally wasting my time, or getting the old version(even though it sounds unavailable now). I'm up in Alberta so I don't know if Toyota Canada is doing the same as USA.

    My truck exhibits two issues.

    1) downshifting to 4th and not shifting up while in cruise. Seems ok with cruise off.

    2) slow reaction to downshift/bogging while under light load on highway. Also gear hunting in 5th and 6th during this time.

Pretty sure I will rebook down the road once more info becomes available. Dealership still says come in anyway and they'll look at it, but I don't want to waste anyone's time, including mine. Thanks to the OP.

Toyota management is absolutely pathetic. This isn't a technical problem, it's a management problem.

Transparency is the key. Good management is, without exception, transparent in all things.

Secrecy provides the necessary skepticism that we all now have with Toyota. This is management 101 - Be transparent in all you do. Sad that Toyota has failed to see this.

You do understand that the entire company is moving from California to Texas in the next couple months right?
And that they have lost a ton of quality people, and have had a complete company re-org.
A lot of people are in new roles, and a lot of the other ones that are left, are just riding it out as long as they can.
they have much bigger things going on than a TSB right now

I just updated one two days ago, with the revised TSB. It still loads in the older file. To me, the revision only means they added one thing to what it corrects. The files are probably the same.

You could go to a different dealer and have them run a health check and look for ECU updates.

I'll do what I can to find out if they are updating that TSB. my boss can get in touch with our regional rep fairly quick.

At this time, I am not available for questions.

Why can't all dealerships be as good as mine? Haha

Actually, depending on where you are, they do have to keep it for quite a while to get the temp in specs.

3-4 hours in cooler temps should suffice.

Easiest to check at about 110°. I've refused to change ATF in overflow transmissions while customers wait.. it just takes too long to drop down to the proper temperature range.

Don't blame the tech, blame the engineers that decided a dipstick was too convenient.

There's not, unless it came out within the past few hours.
I updated mine the week the TSB released, and checked two days ago for a more recent update.. there isn't one (yet?)

Don't feel hopeless, many toyotas over the years have had multiple shift feeling enhancement updates.

What dealership do you work at? I bought and serviced mine at Ardmore. They gave me the runaround on the TSB back in August but finally did it. The CC locking up in 4th gear has stopped. However, the constant gear searching or the needed/appropriate downshift on hills to not go from 65 to 55 without flooring it still an issue. I've just accepted it and have been aggressive with the throttle. ECT takes it to the other side of holding too long in the lower gear...oh, and now the diff howl started about a month ago.

I'm Ford guy and this is my first Toyota. Looks awesome in and out. Rides really well. Just want this transmission issue fixed so i can love this truck like my two Rangers i had for 16 years that i had zero issues with.

Just to be clear, if you are under warranty and getting it checked per TSB, they aren't going to charge you anything.

But they will put two quarts used on your service write up if they have to open two bottles.

True. It may look like they added two quarts when it is 1.2.
