You would think this would be an easy find using Google but can't find what I want. I would like to buy a tachometer that I can get near the spark plug to test the RPM of my small engines. It doesn't take much altitude change to mess up the high-speed jet setting on a 2-cycle chainsaw and lose power or run too lean.

Most handheld tachs are of the photo cell pickup variety but on small engine equipment you don't have access to the flywheel to "see" the rotation. Maybe I'm asking for too much but I want one that

    - Senses by being close to the spark plug wire
    - Can measure up to 12,000 RPM
    - In the $30-$50 range

You would think the photo cell models that count the number of times a mark passes by would be much more expensive but you can pick something like that up for less than $20. The other alternative is a cheap tach/hour meter that you wrap a wire around the spark plug but I don't think they can handle much over 6,000 RPM.

Anyone have a make and model number of something they use for this?

Try Tiny Tach, don't know if they do 2 stroke, but give them a try.Have used them for many years on my garden tractors, shows total time when off,rpm in run.
