Tachometer

Was wondering how hard or easy is it to install a tachometer on my 97 I looked on the internet and i understand the power and ground but the wire that runs under the hood not really sure where it goes I have a 2.7 4 cylinder any help is greatly appreciated thanks

 

Scangauge / ultragauge is plug and play.

I am fairly certain you can also swap the gauge cluster to a tach model.

As for wiring in an aftermarket tach, I dont think its as easy as it is on older vehicles. I dont think you have an ignition coil, OR a provision on the ecu for a tach wire

If there's an IG- terminal in the check connector under the hood then you can wire a tach cluster up if it's not prewired. The IG- terminal is there for mechanics to attach a tach under the hood when doing diagnostics. At some point Toyota might have taken the IG- away.

 

The tach wire going into the cluster is live even if your cluster doesn't have a tach. I added an aftermarket tach by tapping it.

 

I added an aftermarket tach and had to tap into the tach wire at the ecu. If you can find a wiring diagram it will show you which wire.

An Inductive Tachometer that can read from a spark plug wire or coil wire without having to tap directly into the wire.
