Like many others, I hate the chrome plastic trim on my 3rd gen on the grill bezel and rear bumper.

Whats the best ways people are finding to black it out?

I bought plastidip but havent used it yet cause Im skeptical.

I think itd be super expensive for a body shop to do, no?

edit: I pressure wash my plastidip on my wheels, grille, fenders, hood...none of it has ever peeled off.

I plasti dipped my rear bumper and badges and love it. Mask it off and spray multiple coats on a good hot day til your happy. Once it’s dry use a toothpick to lift and get it off what you don’t want it on.

I recently plasti dipped a set of off-road flares that were scuffed a bit and they turned out great but Im still on the fence about changing them out.

I vote for derping it, since you already bought it. If it doesn't look good, just take it off...

Keep in mind that multiple layers make it easier to take off, so take your time and do several coats.

I'm about to do this to the chrome grille bezel on my 2019 TRD OR:

Has NE1 tried to powder coat the chrome grill?

Basically invovles scuffing and then spraying with bed liner. Apparently it holds up better than plastidip.

For the chrome rear bumper caps, I went with BumperShellz. More expensive than dipping, but they were super easy to install and they look great. Perfect match with the rest of the tailgate finish.

For the grille bezel I bought the part for the SR.
I plastidipped my wheels for a temp fix, but on my last tire rotation the dip did not even peel, even from the lug nuts, so I will leave them dipped for a while.
My rear bumper was color matched (Sport).

How much scuffing are we talking here? I've got a 2nd gen and already plastidipped the chrome grill and my wheels, but stopped short of the bumper. I do get peace of mind that i can just take it off later and restore to stock if i wanted to.

Is the scuffing up the bumper + Bed liner a permanent solution?

    Grill bezel, go for SR.
Forget that dip shit.. I like dip, but it won't hold up on chrome. I did my bumper caps and first pressure wash after an offroad trip it peeled right off.

I'm not sure yet. I'm hoping to get it done today. The poster in that thread was able to paint his whole grille because he didn't have the TSS. He said it took 40 min of scuffing to get in all the nooks and crannies. I'm just doing the bezel so I don't think the scuffing will take very long.

I went with the TPO swirl. It’s textured like the rest of the bumper and it’s a perfect match.

I put them on after a camping trip so the rest of the bumper was dirty. Lighting is also trash in my parking garage.

Id let a body shop do it. I was working for a Ford dealership a couple months ago and saw so many trade ins come in with the black out look peeling off in chunks. They went cheap or did not prep it right and the dealership probably ate them alive on the trade. I saw several trucks going to the body shop to be fixed including a 2016 F150 someone butchered. It had chunks coming off the grill and front bumper. Your gonna pay for it one way or another.

Man. This looks soooooo much better with just a little simple fix. I HATED chrome on my last truck. Swore I’d never have it again. Got the color match option on all things. Bought it and noticed the chrome lip around the bezel and was disappointed but only slightly. I’m definitely doing this. How much did you pay for it?

It was between 80 to 100 bucks I think. I dont remember exactly. I really didnt care, I just knew I was doing it no matter the costs.

I just ripped it all off (including the TRD OR stickers), gave it to my kids to play with. Very happy. That was the first thing I did to my Taco when I got it, actually.
