I am doing research before purchasing my first Taco, I will be using it mainly for commuting and highway, but may occasionally go on trails, is it worth going for the 4x4?

That's what I'm thinking, better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it

It's 4x2, it goes [number of wheels] X [number of drive wheels]. ;)

It really depends on the trails you want to tackle. Louisiana probably has a lot of mud, so 4x4 would definitely be an advantage for that. Dry desert is where the prerunners are a more viable option.

    Different answer..........

Depends on how you use the vehicle and where you live.

My 2wd little 5 lugger does everything I need it to, and likely more than 50% of the 4wd owners who don't live in snow country ever do. Remember, TW does not represent the majority of Tacoma owners. The unwashed masses would never look at a vehicle website.

And I didn't buy based on resale. I bought for a 20 year ride.

If you're even asking the question it means you don't have a history of off road use. So will you because you can, or will you just be hopeful?

    Good luck!

As someone who thought I didn't want a 4x4, because at the time when I was buying I thought I knew what I was going to do with the truck, and after I bought it what I wanted to do changed, buy the 4x4. Right now I just have to accept the fact that I have limitations and just have fun with it with what I can do in it until it makes sense for me to go get a 4x4.

Looking back at it now, to me, the price difference isn't really that much.

My Tacoma is a 4x2 DD LSD. It has gotten me to every mountain bike trail that I have wanted to go to. It has gotten me to every shooting spot that I needed to go. It has made it to every trail meet that I have been to and it has even impressed in a flex off. I do however have a 4x4 locked rock crawler that I do all my "hold my beers and watch this" in. If I tear it up then I tow it home and drive my Tacoma to work. If you camp deep in the woods if you chase big game if you like to go to the top of the mountain and look at the city lights then get a 4x4. If you haven't done any of these things you will be fine with a 4x2. Glwd

No off road history is correct and I am buying for the long haul as well just looking at all the options. That's one reason in joined to draw on others experience

4x4 is the way to go! Even though I don't use 4x4 much, it's good to have when I do.

Lol. I was raised in Miami the only mountains I ever saw there where at the beach in a bikini. I have been in Tucson for 20 years and got mountains all around and I love it.

had 3 trucks in 30 years before buying the Taco- none were 4x4 and all drove in some serious snow storms- all were strictly work trucks - bought a 4x4 because in about 10 years will likely be moving to rural upstate NY and the Taco will be the only vehicle for my wife and me, hence AT and 4x4.
I have read members say the TRD off-road in 4x2 is capable enough.
Also 4x4 is higher resale because it costs more new?
Good luck, lots of members will give good information on this forum.

Everyone here in this forum have good things to say of what u want to get. A 2wd, 2x4, and 4x4. Each of these trucks have a capability to perform of whatever terrain in their own state. If this ur first time getting a truck buy what u like and don't regret it afterwards. The old saying shudda cudda wudda are sometimes u don't want to say if I did it right the first time. Ur money ur choice.

If you get 4x4 and rarely need it, make sure you follow the owners manual and put it in 4x4 once per month to exercise it.

4x4 for me for PA winters, and slight treks into the woods for hunting season.
