You can do both with a long travel setup 4x4

Though the latter is much much cheaper than a LT setup and easier to maintain.

4x4, if you can afford the difference. I bought a base 2wd thinking it was going to get better mpg, it doesn't, so I put a lift and 31's. If I had bought the 4wd for another 3-4 grand I wouldn't have spent the $1100 on making it suitable for my needs. On another note, even though I live on dirt roads in South Georgia, I have never needed 4x4. Good tires and clearance are all you really need below snow country, but 4x4 is just plane cooler!

This is the worst saying and horrible financial advice. A tow is maybe a few hundred bucks tops (or free with a buddy or passer by) and 4wd is over $3k+ option.Even if you get stuck once a year (who does that often honestly) you are saving tons of money versus buying a 4wd.

Yes but you pay more up front so it should be but you may get half that back at resale. 4wd dosn't magically make the truck worth tons more, it is proportionate to 2wd in terms of resale and depreciation.

See above, you might get half that back at resale, then tack on the additional financing, up keep, repairs, mpg hit and higher insurance and the costs of a 4wd are that much higher than a 2wd, especially if you have to replace a few parts over the years that 2wd doesn't have.

    This for the most part...

Why is it cooler? Does it help you get laid? Are you one of the many guys who buy it because they think it increases their alpha status in the suburban neighborhood? These days you can't tell a difference between 2wd and 4wd with out looking for a badge or 4wd running gear, they all sit the same (except the F250 and Dodge 2500 with the SFA). I wonder how many guys running around in 4wd trucks could tell if a truck was 4wd if you put them under it? There are so many of you guys running around here in Texas with the cool 4wd option selected it is quite comical. Especially when you see a Raptor or lifted Jeep with squeaky clean under carriages or rockstar/metal rims wrapped in BFG's or any hybrid/mudterrain.

OP, only you know if you will actually need it and use it. Running some dirt back roads no, if you are in to running muddy trails on the regular then yeah (though honestly mud really tears up the truck quickly and makes it sound and leak like a 10 year old truck). My guess is in your area unless you are going out in the mud you aren't going to actually need 4wd, but that is your choice to make. I guess asking a bunch of guys on the internet what you should do when they live in different areas and regions can help your decision process?

    Lots to unpack there!
4wd gets you laid? That explains it!

Answered your own question, just slap the 4x4 stickers on a 4x2. Not many females know what makes it different anyways. They see the sticker and just get a Lil slick nowutumsain

I'd rather have a truck than a piece of lumber. That's just me.

In all seriousness, if you can afford it go 4x4.

What a well thought out and articulate comment, not to mention the fact that you're wrong.

4x4 is worth every penny extra when you live in an area with snow and mountains.

Debate with a fence post instead, this has been hashed and rehashed and rehashed again, 100x over.

Seriously though, as far as the resale goes, I think it depends on where you're at. In my neck of the woods, you'll have a much harder time selling a prerunner- most people won't even look at it, and you're not gonna get the price you think you deserve for your tacoma just because it's a Tacoma. But in a region where a 4x2 is a more viable option, then sure, I can see where it wouldn't make that much difference.

I would go 4x4. Either way though as long as it's a Tacoma.
