The local dealer here has probably 8-10 tacos. Most are DC Sports, the rest are DC base, and AC base, no off roads.

    Amen.
I was hesitant to bring politics into this discussion, but the fact that I now cannot buy the truck I want (and could afford 2 months ago) is a direct result of another horrible program by the big O. How does it help the economy to 1) shred tens of thousands of road worthy vehicles that the poor would love to buy and drive or that could at least be parted out. 2) encourage people to buy cars they can't afford and may well be later repossessed, and 3) Artificially wipe out new car inventory and drive up prices for the consumer? In one foul swoop he has devastated the used car and used car parts markets, inflated new car prices and added $3 billion to the deficit. All this to fund the purchase of cars that the gubmint in part owns! Obama: "Here, I'll take your kids' money and when you need a car I can give you some so you can buy one from me. And when you can't make the payments on it, don't worry, I'll bail you out on that too by taking your grandkids' money" Where do I sign up?

(you don't think there will be bailouts for C4C buyers? just wait. This is exactly like the sub-prime mortgage model that's already worked out so well)

    Rant off

It is really odd that we have all of this negativity about a program that gives a direct bailout to the masses where as during the last administration and the current one the bailout money went to the executives of the banking, mortgage, insurance, auto manufacturing, and stock brokerage businesses.

During the last two crises, 1999 and 2002, the government locked up the crooks. This time around we throw money at them.

And cry all you want but this program has put a lot of Americans back to work with added shifts at auto plants, increased coverage on auto insurance policies, additional XM/Sirius subscriptions, aftermarket parts suppliers and the list goes on.

You are correct in assessing that the future may have a different story if this program was beneficial but right now a lot of people in different industries are back at work and earning money.

    A few bolts are different.
I feel like it is going to help some and hurt others. yes it creates jobs for people in the auto plants and aftermarket because sales go up some. But, what happens to lower class, hard working Jane Doe who owned that clunker that was paid for now has a huge monthly payment on a new car.
Just to save a little gas money, Jane now has a brand new car with a $300+/month car payment. What happens when Jane Doe figures out her job can not support this new $300+ monthly payment, plus put food on the table and buy gas and bla bla bla etc....
Now the bank reposes Jane's new car that she cannot pay for. Now she has no car to get to work, worse gas mileage or not. So in turn she can not feed the family etc. etc. and has to get government support to survive.

    More money wasted.

like the first sentence said, I feel like it is going to help some and hurt others.

So you're saying the execs who got paid are the crooks here? No way. I was adamantly against the bailouts, but once the government gave those industries tarp money with no conditions, they could do with it what they like. If they chose to give regular bonuses to their employees, that doesn't make those employees crooks. Even if those execs did their jobs poorly it doesn't make them crooks. That money is part of their regular income and not illegal in any way. It's easy to criminalize big business when times are tough but what people forget is all the jobs that big business creates (far more than this C4C deal ever will). No, the real criminal is the government for wasting tax dollars.

These new jobs are being created to ramp up production in response to government-created, artificial demand which can not last. And these temporary jobs came about at the expense of the other sectors I mentioned a few post up. The government is deciding which industries survive and which ones fail. And (big surprise) they're favoring the industries they hold stock in. The free market has always and will always do a better job of picking winners. And what happens when C4C ends? 2 things: 1) demand will drop off and there will be a gluttony of inventory. all your new jobs will be lost and the auto industry will once again fall on hard times. And 2) There will be a dozen more "troubled" industries with their hands out expecting the government to do the same for them. I can see it now... Cash 4 Computers! Cash for Refrigerators! Cash for those little green foam blocks you use to arrange flowers!

Seriously, along with the chance to succeed and make money, part of capitalism is the very real chance to fail. It's necessary to keep the marketplace competitive and innovative. When big brother starts manipulating those chances, we all lose. The government can not ensure that we all prosper equally. If equality is the goal, it can only ensure that we all suffer equally.

The 09's are all but sold out already. The 2010's are coming out this month. I have a longbed TRD sport on order and it should be in around the end of September.

5100 set to max, pending LSD and TRD CAI
If people had the money to buy a new car one would think they would have done way before the CAR program if they had nothing but a clunker. What are the odds that 6-12 months from now we get a in flux of repos like we are with foreclosures.

Drove by my toyota dealer this afternoon and it looked like all he had was scions on the lot, and not many of them.

The two dealers here in Tulsa had zero also. The salesman at Jim Norton Toyota did some searching and found me a black DC Sport PreRunner at the "factory" in Houston on 8/10 and had it here for me on the 14th. It was exactly what I told him I wanted. Guess I got lucky!

The thing that sucks about toyota dealer's websites is that you'll see a truck you want, but it isn't actually on the dealer's lot. There's no way to know where it is or if your local dealer can even get it.

I found that the dealers were so busy with cash for clunkers deals, that they didn't want to bother with trying to find me a tacoma, (having one transferred from another dealer, negotiating on price, etc.) so I decided to wait.

I doubt anyone got a better deal with the clunkers rebate than they would if they just waited for the end of the month/year rebates. Anyone here get a clunkers deal PLUS the Toyota rebates ($2k or so off). I'd be surprised...

This was a stimulus for the dealers, not consumers...

Don't even get me started gubmint's participation with this BS. Although it would be interesting to see some stats on how many of what model cars have been sold using that program.

When you go to the Toyota site it now says 2010 Tacoma instead of 2009. Could this have something to do with the low availability of Tacomas currently? Meaning that maybe it's just slim pickens due to them running thru all the old stock and they'll be getting a grip of 2010s in soon. Just a thought.

Exactly! More gov't intervention causing instant gratification for people who don't deserve it but want to live beyond their means and screw all of us as part of the process later down the road. You'd think these assholes would have learned. Makes me sick quite frankly.

How do you think Obama won? All the poor folks crawled out from underneath their rocks and decided to vote. Obama has already helped several poor bums asking for hand-outs during his speeches. Now hes using our hard earned tax dollars to help the poor. We are screwed until the next election.

    http://edition.cnn.com/2009/BUSINESS/08/26/toyota.production.ft/index.html

TOKYO, Japan -- Toyota is poised to slash production by as much as 580,000 vehicles -- or almost 6 percent of global capacity -- in an effort to stem losses amid the sharp downturn in car sales.
Japan's largest carmaker, which is forecasting its second consecutive net loss this year, said it would shut a production line in western Japan from next spring through to the second half of 2011, reducing output by 220,000 vehicles.
Toyota is also looking to pull out of Nummi, its manufacturing joint venture with General Motors, in California, the company said.
"While nothing has been decided, we are in discussions [with GM's administrator] with a view to pulling out of Nummi," said Toyota.
Japanese media have been reporting that the carmaker is also looking at cutting production in the UK, where it makes the Auris, along with other lines in Japan. If this proves to be the case, Toyota will bring its total of production cuts to almost 1m vehicles, or 10 percent of its global production capacity.
It is the first time Toyota has planned to cut production on such a large scale and comes as the group's global sales have been battered by the recession.
