I found this Kamp rite double tent cot fits the 3rd gen perfect!

I would be afraid it would scratch my truck. Not sure how that is a budget they are like 300 dollars u can get a cot and a ground tent for less . More a budget to a roof top tent . Those cots are not meant to be on top of your truck especially on the plastic pieces your going to damage those .

You could probably also set that contraption down on the ground next to your truck and not end up with both rear fenders scratched up from moving around in there.

Uh, why? It’s a Tent cot, set it on the ground. That’s going to scratch your truck and serves no purpose being on the truck.

Where I live, critters are on the ground. I don't like sleeping with critters. Wrap some of those water line foam dilly's around those bars if Ya are worried about scratching. I like that set up. It will haul under my BakFlip and I can leave "things under it when set up. I like it, I do. Port a potty on the tail gate and I don't have to be so worried about the sidewinders in the middle of the night.

Critters? You are in a tent, and on a cot. I doubt a raccoon will chew his way in and climb into the sleeping bag with you to maul you. If it’s grizzly bears or something I’m not sure how effective having it across the bedrails is going to be in terms of protection, probably just put them in a more comfortable feeding position...

Not to mention the the cot is not being supported the way it is designed to be.

I like it - it's off the ground, which is great. Can be moved around while in place. :)

I don't know how much that will scratch the paint, but sleeping elevated keeps mosquitoes away for the most part, and it's just cleaner then on the ground. I've spent plenty of time sleeping on the ground and I'm really not a pussy about it, but given the choice, I'll take elevated

Bears and raccoons don't worry me. Desert critters are what I worry about. Those little sidewinder's mostly. They are almost invisible in the day time little lone the dark of night. Just to mention, I think some blocks between the bed rails and the support arms would help support the cot tent.

...what if somebody bought a cot-tent, removed the legs and bolted to a fold-out platform ala RTT? hrm....

Yeah snakes scorpions etc could be a concern in the desert, but the cot itself is off the ground with the legs of the cot structure that are hanging off the sides of the truck and in the bed. It’s just a matter of how far off the ground. That thing is intended to be supported in multiple places in the frame (where the legs are) rather than two bed rails. It might collapse the cot frame if you sat in the middle of it in the truck bed if the bottom legs aren’t supporting it in the middle.

You could remove those out side arms and add support between the bed rails and tent frame. Solve the scratch and support problems.

One question. Why is it that so many folks are worried about getting eaten in the middle of the night?

I have a topper with vented windoors and a twin bed air mattress that self-inflates. I usually stick my Kids (7&8) in there and I use a hammock system with mosquito net (rain fly as needed) when we go on trips without the wife and dog. I’ve never slept better camping than in a hammock. Obviously would be more of a challenge in the dessert finding places to hang.

Ahh! Horsehair hope circling your camp site will solve that. Oh another question. Has anyone ever met someone, know someone, or actually seen someone who has had a rattlesnake climb into their sleeping bag?

Hammock for the win as long as the weather cooperates. And you can get three or four slung between two vehicles parked side by side.
