No no, full Karen is never a good idea hah. Staying cool and patient is the best thing in these situations.

I personally trust this 3.5L V6 engine more than most current GM and all current Ford engines. However, when my DCLB TRD OR finally arrives (built on June 6), I may seriously consider the Toyota extended warranty.

I don’t blame you at all man.

My 2007 Ford ranger that I wasn’t very nice to, well except for keeping it looking mint, went 165k miles and literally drove like new. I did regular maintenance and replaced 2 thermostat housings, starter, AIC valve, driver wheel hub and maybe some other minor things. Original clutch too.

If my Tacoma won’t make 200k with regular maintenance and maybe a few minor things here and there, I would be very disappointed and would probably look at other options.

Just get the VSA. It's cheap for what you get.

Did you hear a bunch of knocking and banging when the event happened? Why did the mechanic say there was serious engine damage?

    Thermostat or valves fail ?
I say head gasket. Only way other than a cracked block water is getting into exhaust.

Ya, I'm thinking tstat or head gasket. If he didn't have any knocking it should be fixable.

Can't just be the thermostat. Hopefully head isn't warped, but might want to resurface it / check it.

He said his coolant temp gauge wasn't high, kinda makes me think the head didn't get too hot. Definitely weird symptoms.

If he pulled over quick enough which sounds like he did might just be the gasket. But that just doesn't usually just go for no reason. Hoping then a manufacturing defect for the OP in the head. Stress crack etc. That might get corp off the fence. I'm sure they would be very interested in this. Bad production run etc.

Nope, not a bunch. Just 1 slight knock sound when it went into limp mode (or shit the bed, not sure which one at this point), and I didn’t see a bunch of smoke either. Only noticed it when I got out and walked around after the engine was shut off. Mechanic didn’t dig too deep just went off the color of the oil & my description and said I better take it to Toyota to see if they’ll warranty it. Before he gets too far into it. They didn’t charge me anything so that was cool at least haha

    Yep it
was right in the middle of the gage. Unless that lil bugger is what failed me, but I would think there would be other temp sensors that would trip before she popped

I live down a dirt road, and take it to the beach every once in a while. When it rains it gets muddy that’s about it

Wow. Most of these cases I have seen over the years have been from owners off-roading at extreme angles.

One of my buddies just ruined his LS3 in his Jeep due to his external oil sump failed. That is a 7000.00 problem.

I get pretty stupid angles in my Jeep and the only motor issue I had was a head gasket in 104k miles. The head gasket issue was my fault as well (forgot to turn on the cooling fan).

Agree, but shouldnt have to worry about that kind of stuff in a truck of any kind in my opinion.

This road looks very similar to the one that I traveled many many times deer hunting throughout college in Virginia with my Ford Mustang and my classmate’s 79hp 2WD Ford Ranger - only once in 4 years it was super muddy and could not make it up the last big hill and had to walk-in farther with our archery gear.
