Do what makes you happy, the 5.0 is a strong motor. Level it, bigger tires, window tint and drive it.

I had the same truck in white. I loved the 5.0. I hated that it barely fit in my garage. I did not have any problems with mine however I traded it in when it had about 34k miles when we bought our 2015 explorer. Missed having a truck but really did not need a full size so I went 2017 sr 4cy ac mt. Not sure how it would have aged but my work car is a 2005 crown Vic with 220k miles and still runs strong. I have had good luck so far with the few fords I have owned.

    Question:
Are you looking at the Ford?
    OR
Are you looking to get out of your "problem" 3rd gen?

If you need a full size and the Tacoma isn't enough truck that is one issue. But if you are escaping one issue for an older Big 3 truck I hope you have past Big 3 experience otherwise you might be in for an experience. I got out of my older Dodge because I was tired of throwing good money after bad. In addition to being older it was a Dodge. 2 Dodges in a row and I gave up. My neighbor has a 2010(?) F150 and after the minor body rust being addressed 12 months later it's back. How many times can he fix it before giving up?

I know lots of people have been hard on Toyota for 3rd gen issues and their perceived handling of them but the Big 3 will outright deny issues and often the aftermarket comes to the rescue at your wallets expense. The only good news with the Ford is you can get parts everywhere.

Yes to both. I decided a few months back that I would unload the Tacoma once the math worked out and I found a good replacement OR I would let Toyota fix the diff. If Toyota said they could (and did) fix the diff, I would hold on to this thing until the wheels fell off. It's grown on me--problems and all. The diff howl drives me insane and it comes in waves. Sometimes I can block it out and it doesn't bother me; other times I want to drive it off a freaking cliff. So, I'm not in a "hurry" to unload the Tacoma, but it's going to happen in the next year for sure if the diff isn't fixed.

As for looking at the Ford specifically... I started by looking at older 2nd gen Tacomas, but they hold their value like crazy and I would be "downgrading" in terms of technology, ride comfort, cabin noise, etc. Then I switched to T4Rs. Those are sweet but also balls expensive for what you get, and I do use my truck bed and the trunk of the T4R would force me to get creative more than I'd like. Not to mention the T4Rs I drove had brake pedal buzzing like my Tacoma had (before they replaced the brake accumulator). Then I just started browsing for trucks in my area and stumbled onto this one the other day.

The thing is old, but it has more tech and comfort features than the Toyotas. It shifts smoothly and predictably. It had some worn K02s on it, slightly cupped in the front, which makes me question the front struts health, but the cabin, even with all the tire noise, was quiet and comfortable. I drove a couple other F150s on the lot and I am very impressed. The Tacoma, honestly, doesn't seem to set the bar very high. The F150s were smooth, quiet, and you could feel the power. I almost forgot what it was like to drive down the interstate in a vehicle that was quiet--no howls, no buzzing vibes at certain RPMS, little wind and road noise. The ride comfort rolling down the interstate was noticeably better than the Tacoma (even with worn AT tires). edit: I should also mention that I reset the MPG calc and after my test drive in half highway half city stop/go it was at 19.9 MPG. In a nice smooth 5.0 V8.

I'll admit, my biggest concerns are
    1. Reliability of a Ford longterm -- what is going to need to be replaced in the next 50K? My Tacoma has an 8y 125K platinum warranty that corporate gave me, so no major out of pocket expenses for a while
    2. Depreciation. It's already taken its biggest hit and should be leveling off, but its @ $22k now. In 4 years, what's it going to be worth? $8K? 10K? The Tacoma, with all its flaws, will be hovering around $25-30k if current trends are any indication (it might not hold its value like previous gens with all the issues, but I doubt it will tank like the Ford).
    3. The size. I live in a city, park in an underground garage, and occasionally have to find street parking in the city. The F150 isn't THAT much bigger, but its pretty damn big. I do love that I could fit what seems like the entire cab of the Tacoma in the backseat of the F150 though. It's really comfortable in there. My dog would live like a king in that back seat. Also, the trails up to a cabin I go to and the 4x4 run I do every once in a while would be pretty tight in the F-150.

I had a 2011 FX4 with the 5.0 and that thing was nice! I had a horrible wreck in mine but it kept me safe and I didn't have a scratch on me.
    I say do it

If you want to haul a big load, buy a Chevy Silverado. If you want to swallow a big load, buy a Ford. Buying a Ford is like being butt fucked by your uncle Rick..

I went from a 2nd gen Tacoma to a (new granted) f150 with the 5.0. They don't compare the f150. They are much nicer IMO. Transmission shifts flawless and the 5.0 is such a nice power plant. Cab is silent in comparison to the taco. Now my 2nd gen taco never gave me any issues so don't take that as me bashing it. A fullsize will always be more comfortable but keep in mind gas and parking, ect. They aren't without their downfalls.

My 04 ranger with the 4.0 v6 was just as reliable as my tacos so I've always had positive experiences with ford. My old man is a ford guy too. Never problems there either. In fact he overworks and overloads all his fords and they keep going.

If it says anything about the 5.0, my truck is paid for next year and i will be getting a 5.0 mustang for a garage piece. Solid and powerful.

Here's a good read on the coyote

If you want a fullsize truck then get a new one. Don't get something with that many miles on it just to put some cash in your pocket or to get rid of a perceived problem truck. My rear diff started howling at 1200 miles and at 3900 is still howling. Stick it out - Toyota will get this fixed because too many people are complaining. 86K miles on a 6 year old truck is not going to be better in any way. Nothing will hold its value like your Taco. I'm not bashing Ford because my Ford trucks were completely trouble free but this is a bad deal. You don't want a 6-7 year old truck because your rear diff is howling. I have yet to see one on here seize up so until then it's just a noise - one that my 2016 Yukon XL also makes at the same speed. Best of luck.

Well i own the exact truck u are looking at. 2011 F150 FX4 Supercrew 5.0. Bought it brand new in August 2011. Traded in a 04 fx4 with 250k. First year of the coyote(in F150) and ecoboost. So glad i did not get the ecoboost, it was tempting.

The truck now has the same millage (84k) you are looking at. It has been the best truck i have ever owned. Up until recently I had done nothing to the truck but change the oil every 5k. No battery, No alternator, nothing. At about 80k the AC system started acting up. Ended up needing two blend door actuators and a blower motor to the tune of about $1100 parts and labor at the dealer(Common problem). Other then that I recently put in a new battery, changed the transmission fluid and filter, changed the diffs and and TC fluids, and did a coolant flush.

I have had a 2.5 in leveling kit on the front and 285s on the stock rims since new. The stock ball joints and front end parts are still in excellent condition (very surprising). My shocks will need replacing soon, especially in the rear. I plan to replace the level kit with a 2.5 fox coilover setup, Deaver leaf pack and Fox's in the rear.

Like I said, the best truck I have ever owned. Its paid for and i plan to keep it forever. It is kind of big if u live in city. On road, It is hands down a better riding truck with the level kit and d range tires than my new stock tacoma. Way less vibrations in the steering wheel. Off road the tacoma would drive circles around it. I was just underneath it today, and it looks brand new under there. No weeping diff, and no leaks of any kind. My new tacoma has the weep at 15k. Hope this helps.

I had a 2015 5.0L F-150 company truck. It was obscenely quiet and comfortable on the freeway. It got better MPG than my 2nd gen DCSB. If I needed a bigger truck, I'd get the F-150 and wouldn't consider a "gen poo" or "turd gen" Tacoma.

Doesn't sound like a good deal to me, but then again.... Owning a third gen for an extended period doesn't seem like a good thing either.
