I had the 2014 FX4. It had the 5.0 and was an oil burning pile of shit. It was my first and last ford. If you think you had problems with your taco wait till you start driving the FX4.

Miss my old fx4. Mine was a 13. First year for the better interior. Truck was beautiful! Pretty loaded. Leather, heated and cooled seats, Factory HID's and my touch. I had the ecoboost. Lots of power which I miss the most

The 5.0 is a solid motor, you really can't go wrong and you get about the same if not better mpg than the ecoboost. Just not as good at towing as the ecoboost. I work at a ford dealership and I will say that's the age and mileage you need to start dumping money into those things. Some are more solid than others, as you'll find that with any vehicle. Bigger and more expensive, you will find more problems down the road than you will than a Toyota. While they are good trucks it will nickel and dime you. As one person stated he already had to have his blend door actuator replaced twice. I see these in the shop for this all the time. Rarely see a Toyota with a dash pulled out on it. Just saying.

Anyway do what you feel is right. If your not happy with your Toyota than get rid of it. If you do buy the f150 just spend the extra money and get a platinum warranty

Nothing wrong with the Ford but from your list of advantages regarding size, interior space and power the Taco wasn't the right truck for you anyway.

Mobtown Offroad got rid of two Tacomas (2nd gen & 3rd gen), and now exclusively uses a 2013 Ford F-150 5.0L V8. Seems pretty happy with it and does the job, but hopefully this post will tag him, and he'll add more:

Just FYI you can probably get a newer used one for like 5-6 grand more. I'm talking like a 15-16 with 20k miles on it. It would be an xlt not a platinum or limited is all

I'd take the 10k in equity and get something a little newer with lower miles. You're hitting the mileage of needing some maintenance done. Also, once you hit that 100k mile mark you may see some more drop in value as well. I went from a 2011 to 2016 tacoma, my son was born and swore I needed something larger to help with it. Traded the 2016 tacoma for a 2014 silverado with about 27000 miles on it. Kept it for 3 months and went back to another 2016 tacoma. I couldn't live with the size of that truck trying to park and just drive through town. The tacoma felt better, even with it's initial issues like every other model remake, and the tacoma held its value better.

If you know how to work on a Triton they are not that bad. Wife has a 5.4l that is at 200k miles. I've done fuel pump, one spark coil, plugs and that is it. Thing has held up fine. The pita is just working on them. Motor design is dumb.

The 5.0 coyote is beast. Cams, intake, exhaust and 100 shot of nitrous all day on stock long block is a fun setup.

A thread on a Tacoma owner wanting to trade his truck for a Ford....

Not only that, but the majority of 3rd Gen Tacoma drivers saying "Do It"....

Thank you Mike Sweers, you are the destroyer of worlds....:bananadead:

Ever find the root cause? Anything you can tell me to look out for?

That engine is getting some pretty rave reviews.

    It's s Ford. I've owned an 86 5.7l bronco, 79 5.0 mustang, 99 5.4l expedition. They all burnt oil. Haha.

My 96 4runner burns oil also. Just a high mileage thing usually.

I'm genuinely surprised by the responses here. I know some guys are saying do it because they think it will be a disaster, but there are some very helpful reviews from guys who own both.

I have an email out to the service manager I'm working with re: the diff howl. If he says no TSB in sight...

I interpret most of the 3rd gen owners telling him to do it are really just saying "just move on to something else that will make you happy so we don't have to hear about the same old complaints about your diff whine and how unhappy you are with your truck".

Do what makes you happy. I traded in my F150 for my Taco. F150 was a nice smooth ride but the Taco is by far my favorite out of the two.

I've seen random 3rd gen owner regret comments on YouTube atkinson cycle videos.

People are generally disappointed with the 3rd gen Tacoma.

Tacoma owners are an interesting group of people. Yes, we complain about everything on one hand but on the other, ask how many people are REALLY ready to part with their truck. I tend to ignore YouTubers out there complaining because the squeaky wheel gets the grease. So many people out there just want attention and I'm not willing to dish my time over to that group of folks. If they spent that same time working out their issues they wouldn't have anything to complain about.

There are no perfect vehicles out there. Not one. I have owned over 30 new vehicles and have yet to own one that is perfect. I would do many things differently if I could with my Taco. I would want more power but then again mine has enough for my use of this truck. I would like Power seats but then again I never move my seat once I set it anyway. I would want a rear diff that doesn't drown out my radio but I know this will get fixed sooner than later. I bet many of us would like the truck to be Lexus quiet (they make dynamat for that, BTW) but it's a truck.

My Taco is a flawed truck. I'm a flawed person. Seems like a great fit to me. Peace.
