Honestly if i ever had to make a different choice than a Taco, I'd choose a Tundra first unless i was so butt hurt from Toyota that i had to make a different choice.

It would then be down to the lesser of two evils, Ford F150 or GMC Sierra.
The Ford would probably be easier to diagnose and repair daily, but the GMC might not be around for the long haul, just saying.

    Cheers!

I believe it is all in what you like. if you prefer full size id get whatever brand you like. Everything has issues these days and I think most vehicles in general are good. some do rattle more and some don't. enjoy whatever you get.

Man....you nailed it. We drove from Dallas to DC and back in a 2016 1500 with 18000 miles on the ODO....what a POS! The shake occurred around 67-73mph for us and it literally gave us a headache it was so bad. We had 4 grown men in it with a few suitcases in the back and we bottomed out on a few large bumps! No backup camera, no blutooth (work truck) no AC in the back, bad gas mileage even on the highway, and the power just wasn't there. I would never consider a Chevy after that horrible experience. Everyone in the truck hated that thing by the end of the trip and the back seat is not even close to comfortable. It would also be nice if the steering wheel was centered with the seat!

First time I've heard the engine had anything to do with the chevy shake. I've heard drive shaft, axle, tires, but not particular engine. I guy I work with has a new Silverado DC 1 ton long bed (huge) with the 6.2 ..it shakes. I know another guy with a 2017 Denali HD diesel.. it shakes. Then I know plenty of guys with different configs that don't shake.

    My new 2017 Z71 1500 DC. 5.3, 6 speed, has ZERO shake.
If it had any shake, I would not have bought it.

We may be talking about two different things. There is the Chevy shake and then the vibration that exists going from V4 to V8. Ours was so bad until it made us sick. I worked directly with Mary Barbra's office and with their corporate team, to include VP of GMC. They told me that the 6.2 with 8 speed was the only one that didn't have the vibration. You are one of the lucky ones if you don't have it. The large majority of GM trucks have it. Mine didn't start on my last one until about 3000 miles. Also, Google GM truck cabin pressure issues. My wife has MS and couldn't function after a routine trip in our Yukon. I was to the point of suing GM and was about to notice their entire corporate team for depositions but they decided to replace my Yukon.

Wow.. that Tahoe/Yukon cabin pressure is a strange issue. I hadn't heard of that.
Yes, I was referring to the chassis shake, not V4>V8 shake.

While I agree with a lot of what you said, comparing MSRP vs current going price is just not valid. It needs to be price paid vs current going rate. Just look at some (too many) people here. They are paying MSRP or higher in some cases for the taco. When I was shopping in SoCal, dealers told me to go someplace else when I tried to negotiate ANYTHING under MSRP. Seriously, more than one told me they don't go below MSRP on the tacos and to check in a few days for proof that somebody bought it.

That does not happen at all with domestic trucks. You can walk into a GMC/Chevy dealership and have 10% off MSRP for just walking through the door.

A large part of why Taco resale values are higher is because people aren't getting huge #'s off MSRP. You're either getting the deal on the way in or the way out.

The resale is untouchable on a Taco. I just traded my 08 SR5 V6 AC 4x4. I paid $24k and change back in September of 07.
With 170k on it, they gave me $8k for trade. So after 10 years and 170k, the truck retained 33% of what I originally paid for it. Outstanding!

Wow my ACM shift is 100% imperceptible. I have to look at the dash to see when it transitions from 4-8.

Oh and I've seen reports of the 6.2 having the Chevy shakes, just not as many. I heard it's a hit or miss on the culprit too. One guy found his driveshaft out by a mile. Thing looked like jump-rope when they turned it at speed in the machine shop. Had to lathe it out, re-balance and that fixed it. Other guys it's the carrier bearing. Seems like no rhyme or reason.

Shit I remember an old F-250 I had. I think it was an '85 and it the big ass 460 V8 in it. It suffered from one tremendous death wobble. Go over an uneven bridge expansion joint and the entire rig VIOLENTLY shook, damn near ripping the steering wheel out of your hands. You had to slowly press the brakes, get the truck below a certain speed then carry on. Not every hit did it either- just out of the blue and always at speed, lol.

Rebuilding the front end and a host of other attempted fixes- I finally sold it to a ranch and told them it was best used in the field hauling hay- not over the road travel.

It's always something with trucks these days. Seems every manufacturer has their issues.

I have owned tons of GM vehicles but for me it all seemed to go downhill around the time of the bailout, maybe a year or so before when they were cutting every conceivable corner to get by. My replacement Yukon XL had the front shocks and struts go out at 3800 miles and we just cracked 10,000 miles now and the rears are out and this is on smooth roads. The 15 had so many issues until it would make Smitty's Tacoma look like a picture of reliability. Honestly, pages and pages of stuff with that thing. It was the worst vehicle we ever owned. My 16 is doing better but it still has stupid stuff like loose trim pieces and a rear taillight that will not stay on no matter what you do. This is my last GM vehicle absent a quality renaissance.

Some of the old Fords had that death wobble for sure but my Fords (maybe I was lucky) were all trouble free. Never a single issue. I think Ford clearly owns the fullsize market now, not just in sales but overall they offer more.

Chevy is bringing a new truck in 19 with more aluminum (except the bed) so we will see how it turns out.

My Tacoma has been great except for that stupid rear diff howling that is driving me insane but my 16 Yukon has that too...

You make a valid point but that's only part of the equation and I'd argue a smaller part than you think. Just need to look at late stage depreciation and how mileage effects the resale, this is pretty much directly tied to perceived reliability. I have access to resources being in the car business that makes this really easy to illustrate. For example there were zero changes between 2008 and 2009 F150 FX4 but average market mileage is pretty significant so its a good example, same story with 2008/2009 4x4 tacomas.

    Average mileage/market value on 2009 FX4 = 90k miles / $20,744
    Average mileage/market value on 2008 FX4 = 120k miles / $15,324

So in 30k miles it shed 25% of its market value. Which is exactly why I was telling OP this is a horrible mileage to buy a Ford at, its about to hit another significant depreciation curb (passing 100k miles) while requiring a ton of maintenance around the same 100k mark. That's why I said I'd rather buy a Ford with 120k miles for $15k that's already had that work done vs a 90k miles one for $20k+ that's going to need it.

    Average mileage/market value on 2009 Tacoma 4x4 = 93k miles / $21,844
    Average mileage/market value on 2008 Tacoma 4x4 = 119k mles / $19,676

pretty much the same average mileage differences but instead of shedding 25% of its market value the Tacoma only sheds 9%.

Its not really news to anyone that knows Tacoma's, the mileage does NOT effect resale value nearly as much as any domestic brand, this is due to the perception of reliability which I'd say the Tacoma has well earned. Its the reputation that accounts for the majority of its insane resale value, the lack of rebates sure does help but if that's all there was to it than the Honda Ridgeline would blow the Tacoma's resale value out of the water as Ridgelines also have no factory support, no rebates and even closer to MSRP average transaction prices (I've been with both Toyota and Honda)
