I was driving and without warning my 2006 Taco 4x4 made a loud popping sound and shut off. I coast the truck to the side of the road. I restarted the truck no problem, however the truck will not go. Parked on a hill, in park, the truck rolls backwards. In 4x4 it doesn't roll backwards but it will only pull forward not actually roll forward. If you put it in reverse while in 4x4 its will go a small ways then put it in drive it goes forward a short distance before it stops moving abruptly. I think my rear axle is buggered. Any comments?

the drive shaft looks fine. i don't really understand why I can reverse it a ways, then it will drive forward a short distance before "looking up." Does this sound like I'll have to replace my whole rear axle?

check ebrake lines, mine got snagged when one of the chains I had on came partly lose...
Probably not your problem but I had the exact same symptoms even after I reset the chains. it would go backwards but not forward. we seemed to fix it with a host clamp since it was ripped from the original clamp to the drum.

side note: my brake light and abs lights were on until I was able to completely release the line on that one side.

Edit: I was in 4wd at the time

Pretty sure its not the ebrake. I can apply the ebrake and release it. When the truck is in park it rolls unless the ebrake is on.

I couldn't really say where the bang came from. It happened so suddenly and out of nowhere. I did feel it though.

When it happened I was in 2wheel. I tried driving it in both 4hi and low with the same problem. I could reverse then go a short distance forward but then it would lock up and stop suddenly.

It has about 80,000kms on it so I'm hoping it will fall under the 100,000kms warranty. Should find out tomorrow.

Good luck with the fix. What dealership are you taking it to?

Your truck doesn't happen to be blue with a canopy on it does it?
Saw one today parked on the side of the road in Port Moody, going up
the mountain. Thought that might be yours.

Thanks everyone for the welcomes! I called the dealership this morning and they say it falls within the 100,000km 5year drivetrain warranty IF it is a warrantably issue. Here's hoping.
The tow truck driver said to me when he dropped it off at my house, "this is the first time I've ever towed one of these." lol I'm not sure whether to be impressed by that or feel self loathing.

Canadianboy: nope that wasn't me. Mine is white and no canopy. I was heading up the hill heading east right after the portmann bridge. Luckily it didn't happen on the port mann.

maybe a dud, maybe bad driving from the previous owner. I've only had the truck for about a month. No symptoms though, that's weird part.
