    Hello,
Totally new to the taco world and just picked up my ‘22 DCSB 4x4 Sport 2 weeks ago.

Complete fail on my part, call it excitement or whatever, but after driving it about 500 miles, I noticed the oil on the dipstick is about 5/8” to 3/4” above the full mark (should have done my diligence at the dealership). I searched about this and learned of the trouble it is to get an accurate read on these dipsticks, especially with brand new oil.

Level ground, totally cold engine, dipstick out for 10 mins, and several wipes and rechecks…

I used the forum search function and found a few threads like this, so my apologies if this has been discussed in detail already. I’m just worried that I did some damage to my new truck. Any advice is appreciated. I won’t be able to drain any oil until this weekend.

A few more bits of info: 500 miles on the odometer (9miles when I left the lot), bought it from a dealership quite a long distance from where I live, and the 500 miles so far has been grandpa-like driving to save MPGs. I revved it up kinda high maybe 4 times total for about 1-2 seconds (short freeway on-ramp)

I got this advice from another TW member:

    Pull the dipstick out.
    Wipe it.
    Wait 5 minutes.
Insert dipstick and check oil level.

    This should be accurate.

every time you want to check again, wait another 5 minutes.

    Welcome and congratulations!

The oil dipstick tube bend combined with the low-viscosity oil makes an accurate reading challenging.

Notice how the dipstick tube makes a 90 degree bend.. one side of the dipstick will be somewhat accurate and the other side gets wiped against the tube wall and makes it look like it's overfilled... the more times you check it in a row the harder it gets imo. If your oil is fresh/new.. it makes reading the level even more challenging.

Sorry if my post isn't that helpful.. perhaps someone else will have a trick.

Yup, that’s how I’ve been doing it, read up on that on the numerous other similar threads (again, my apologies for adding yet another of these threads haha). It’s pretty consistently about 3/4” above full.

Yes this describes my experience pretty accurately. One side was usually all smeared up. Pic taken is from the clean side. Every time it looked pretty much like this

Bring it back to dealer. That is the luxury of a brand new car.

Definitely plan to take it to my local dealership. Does it matter that it’s not the dealer I bought from? (another noob question I know)

im mostly concerned that I did some damage driving 500 miles like this. And if it’s ok to wait a few more days until I can take it in. Is there anything I can ask the service guys specifically to check while they are fixing this?

Little over the dot is ok. Dealers typically put more than needed in the Tacomas.

It will read over if it sits for a long time.

Run it, let it sit for 10 mins, then check it.

Tried to read it a few different ways. I first noticed the overfill after it was sitting cold for about 3 hours. Checked several times (dipstick out 5-10 mins, etc). Then I drove it around the block, shut it off and took the dipstick out for 10 mins.
It has consistently been above by about 3/4”

thanks for all the quick replies btw! I have much to learn

scuffing up the stick with a file/sandpaper helps. It does appear over... just drain some out and add what's needed back in. If you have a auto tranny don't drain the trans oil out from the pan in the middle of the truck... the engine oil drains from under the engine (don't laugh... it happens.) You should be fine... i'd be more concerned if it was that much below the low mark.

You’d already have blown a seal if it was a problem. And it’s under warranty, so you have nothing to worry about. While it’s not good to overfill oil, most cars can take a quart over without any damage (not recommending this, just saying).

My 2021 has been a little lower than that since new. Just did my 2nd service at 6k and they put the same amount in cause it’s still at the same level. A little over wont hurt it.

Well I’d like that extra. I had the dealer do it’s “free” oil change and was down a 1/2 qt. It was within the range but still low. Last oil change at dealer.

Relax on this brother! A dip stick is not a precision measuring device. It tells you if you have oil and that it is in the range of acceptability for your engine. A little over or under is not going to hurt anything. You can run back to the dealer over this if you want, but understand that in this case you will be wasting both your time and theirs. Again, relax and enjoy your new truck man!

If you really want to drain some oil out of it, you an use the drain bolt on the oil filter canister. It will only drain what is currently in the filter. Then when you put the bolt back on (10 ft-lbs), you can run and check the level. Filter holds about half a quart.
