I have owned 3 straight Tacos over last 20 years...2 second gens, and a ‘17 Pro. Lease is up in a few months. Nothing against Tacos, but I’m thinking about trying a Jeep. 3 great Taco ownership experiences. Just think I want to mix it up...and Toyota doesn’t offer a FJ anymore. 2020 Pro’s are going to be a little pricey. OR 6 spd would probably be my choice. Not considering the new Jeep “truck”...just a Jeep that I can customize. Also, don’t want a restoration project. I’m not a gear head. Any mechanic types here advise against recent (last few years) Jeeps?

Who the fuck "customizes" a lease?

Jeeps are a Fiat product and have horrible QC but they're better in the rocks, Tacos better in the desert. YMMV.

Leasing isn’t bad when you can stay within the miles AND the truck holds its value. TFS sets the residual value so low that even though I don’t own it, I actually have about $5500 trade-in value (going by NADA). It’s not for everyone, but it worked for me on this one and I never had to put out a down payment.

    None....yet.
Well since you're not doing the work anyway, get what you want. I personally wont even work on them after helping my brother douchebuggy his rubicon out. Hate jeeps. You also have to take into consideration how annoying it would be to you to have 50 people wave at you every day.

You say the pro is going to be pricey, last time I looked at jeeps, I thought they were very pricey. I would wonder what kind of residual value you will get on a Jeep?

Edit: I'm wrong. Gladiator is now showing up in multiple trim packages.

Will add nothing wrong with Toyota Tacomas, the next vehicle will likely be a Miata or Cooper S, maybe a Ridgeline for those older Bonnies so I can pick them up at the garden centre

I love jeeps and only made the jump to the Tacoma a couple weeks ago because I wanted a truck and the Jeep pickup is absurdly priced for what you get. If your looking new the JL’s are a nice rigs. If your looking slightly used stay 2012 or newer with the 3.6l v6. They do hold their values very well, almost on par at this point with the Tacoma’s. I’d say go for it. Me personally , I’m holding onto my taco till the wheels fall of but at some point I will have a older 2 door tj or yj with the 4.0.

Jeeps have their own vibe. I like the Wranglers--rented one while in Hawaii--just find their lack of refinement annoying as a daily driver. Also for 2-door lack of passenger and trunk space. As far as reliability...well you be the judge.

The latest Compass is actually a great little SUV—we rented one recently and I was surprised and impressed. The Grand Cherokee is of course a well-regarded machine performance-wise, but pricey! And of course reliability.

If you’re not modding and leasing and/or selling in a few years, the reliability issue may not seem big, but a forum member did report her new JL developed a transmission problem requiring replacement with only a couple thousand miles on it. Looked bitchin’ in orange but wouldn’t run, so there’s that to contend with.

While Itchy's car choices are concerning, his chosen spelling of "center" (spelled as God intended it) is telling.

Add all of it up and he's obviously Canadian.

Just got my first Toyota after 10 years with Jeep: I wouldn’t recommend you to go to Jeep. Prices are through the roof, customer service and overall quality through the floor.

These are Jeep’s pros and cons according to me:

    Pros:
    • Fun to drive. Wrangler is no sports car, but the 3.6 and 8-speed automatic have Tacoma’s 3.5 and 6-speed automatic beat every day of the week, both in terms of performance and refinement. And if you plan on leasing, who cares if it blows up at 100,000 miles.
    • Removable top and doors make for a fun drive ride any day of the week
    • Excellent off-road capability right out of the box. Greater articulation, stout transfer cases, large tires and solid axles make for an unbeatable package on the trail - this may or may not be for you. I don’t know if you off-road
    • Comfortable driving position and excellent visibility
    • Easy to customize

    Cons:
    • Niggling quality issues, mostly assembly. Expect rattles and squeaks before 6,000 miles. Miscellaneous electronics issues which, although covered under warranty, will make you keep your service advisor’s number on speed dial
    • Vague steering. For some reason, JL steering got more vague instead of more precise. No one can explain that.
    • Expect a leaky roof. Despite a thorough redesign, Jeep maintains a 75 year tradition for tops that leak
    • Horrendous customer service. This varies from dealer to dealer. But the best Jeep service you can expect is mediocre.
    • Stupid prices. Wrangler prices are through the roof. I just saved $20,000 on a Tacoma vs a comparably equipped Wrangler. This may not be much of an issue if you lease. Wranglers hold their value fine, although less than before; Gladiator residuals are being subsidized heavily (70% after 4 years)
    Good luck!
