02 4x4 man trans , last night after some wheeling we stopped for fuel. when we tried to leave , it wouldnt go into any gear . after shutting it off and restartng it in gear we were able to make it home . its never done that before. it was a bit hard to get into second leading up to that issue. drove it today just fine with zero issues... any clues what to look at ?

Loss of hydraulics for clutch . I think you nailed it with the idea of clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder . Check the fluid level of the clutch master , looking for leaks . Look under the dash where the master cylinder comes through the firewall . Is the hydraulic fluid for your clutch dark ? usually an indication the seals on the master and slave cylinder are done !
Thats where I would start .
    Hope this helps .
Edit : to add to this , it sounds like you may have lost hydraulic clutch pressure . The truck sits overnight and the fluid bleeds down for fresh hydraulic pressure in the morning

This same thing happened to me and it was the clutch master low on fluid. Mine has a very slow leak (I fill it once every couple years) so its not worth changing right now but a few months ago it left me stuck. To top it off, I use DOT 5 in my clutch so the fluid isn't available everywhere. Anyway, after adding some fluid and pumping the clutch pedal a few times it was back to normal.
