When I took it in to the dealership they said that is the engine doing a "self clean" It sounded to me like valves tapping and I got worried, but it's normal.

Do you need to know, or care?
It only goes into clean mode at idle and normal operating temperature.

Picked my 2017 up today. Didn't notice it until I opened the hood. Does sound like valve clatter. Can't hear it too well in the cab but now that I noticed it I can't not hear it. Glad this is normal. May have to get a louder exhaust to mask the sound.

I have a noticeable "knock" as well. I hope I'm just paranoid.

It's the high pressure fuel pump driven of the cam lobe.

So I've been thinking about the whole, "it's cleaning the injectors" that Toyota claims. However what is it cleaning it with? Is there some hidden resoviour with an unlimited supply of fairy dust? If not, how is it "cleaning" them with just gas?

It opens a vent basically on the injector and the pressure blows out any carbon build up.

    Mine does this often.

    Dealer said no biggie.

My two neighbors have 3rd gens, both of which sound identical to mine. No known issues.
