My wife has a Land Cruiser so we have the best of both worlds. Need the room? Drive hers. Hauling mulch, plants, garbage, furniture? Tacoma time.

I grew up driving 4Runners; my dad had one of each gen, up to the 4th, when they stopped producing manual transmission. Then I got my own, a 5th gen, and then the dealership took it back and put me in a newer one at a better lease rate (family friend.)

This year, I switched to a 2020 Tacoma OR, and couldn’t be happier. There’s a lot of similarities between the two, as well as some differences, but I think it boils down to needs. The closed cab for us was never a necessity, as was the third row seating. We rarely have rear-seat passengers, other than our dog. For our purposes, I think the open bed will come in much handier, too; camping, hauling landscaping stuff, lumber, etc.

I also appreciate the interior upgrades of the Tacoma, whereas the 4Runner’s waaaaaaaaiiiiiiiitttttttiiiing on making any significant changes - and the price difference. For a truck with more features, and is five years newer than my last, I’m saving almost $10K.
