Then you are golden. Find a wreck at local pick and pull and grab all the parts @medic2230 listed above to keep it cheap. That's what I did.

Edit: since you only want to tow your boat you can even skip the bigger alternator and battery for now

I found a 2017 6-speed V6, and the manual stated it was only rated at 3500 and was excluded as having a tow package- I would have gone for that vehicle because I love manuals, but opted for the automatic that is rated at 6500 lbs. my impression was that Toyota does not install their stock tow package on the manual 6-speed, my error?

Yes. It's a great motor, coupled with the supercharger it even beats Toyotas small V8. But unfortunately it was always a rather thirsty engine and mpg regulations forced Toyota to change things so they came up with the smaller 3.5

They upped the compression on the newer ones too- its higher than the 4.0 also. Hope it really only needs regular octane gas. I think I'd put better fuel in anyways when towing.

Please stop adding to this thread, all you're doing is adding mis-information when you try to talk about the '16-'17's. @runrob1 Also read this thread --> https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-tacoma-towing-bible.4031/

Sorry about that, I was quoting from the specs and manual. The 2017's 3.5 liter engine has 11.8:1 compression, and the 4.0 has 10:1. The 2017 manual calls for 87 octane fuel, which is regular in California. That's rather low for higher than 10:1, especially for pulling a load. Sorry if I wasn't clear about the 6-speed truck- the info I saw was in the owners manual when I was at the dealer. I'll try to be more careful. I should write in question format anyways since I'm a newbie. Nice tow info reference though- thanks!

If you have the tow package you'll be fine, if not you're over the towing limit. Have you confirmed if your truck has the towing package?

I tow a 5,500lb travel trailer in the Sierras with my Tacoma. The boat will tow a bit different (less of an air brake than a travel trailer and a different weight distribution on the trailer).

Did you check if that truck came with the tow package. Automatic is the same 3500lb without the tow package.
