thanks. after looking and considering for all these months before actually pulling the trigger i think the thule setup for access cabs tends to work out the best, unless you want to get all kinds of fancy like that one guy did and transform an oem rack to fit your truck...... but i want no part of those shenanigans!

well started my new project the other day and am moving right along with it. here it is!

then tied them together and made some framework....

and just to get an idea of how it will look i threw a spare trail tire and wheel up there.

still have to make the mount for the spare and weld it on then clean everything up and paint it and it will be ready to go. by then i should have some T-nuts so i can secure it to the bed rail system.

this wont be an everyday riding around thing on my truck but will be put on for meets and rides to increase bed storage space(same thing the the roof basket will be used like)

so the big question is........ what does TacomaWorld think of it???

I think it looks great! I would probably remove the spare tire mount from under your truck and mount it under your new rack and mount the tire that way. You'd still be able to use your rear view mirror, too.

who needs a rear view mirror???? if i mounted the tire on the bottom i would just think of something else to put on top of it and block the view. HA!!!

I always wanted to figure out a way to put a switch in to activate the reverse cam when not in reverse, thereby eliminating the need to have a clear view out the rear window.

Can always put another roof basket on it. Deux basketa!

There's a mod for this that is in (I think) the 2nd Gen Tips, Mods, and More thread. Just look for "Backup Camera Anytime."

Did you rivet the brackets to your toolbox? I was thinking about something similar when I get a Hi-Lift, but I don't want a whole bunch of threads protruding into the toolbox.

im not that fancy, its just 5/16 bolts threaded through with i think 3/8 plate steel pieces in the toolbox to add strength.

    primed
    [IMG]
    painted

and installed, yes I know how filthy my engine bay is.... havent had time to clean it up real nice.

it will be a very subtle difference going with the color match paint since its kind of dark plastic to begin with but i fig i would at least give it a try.
