and the OR has the rat tat tat that might cause "some" drivers to soil themselves .....and have to call someone to pull the truck up the boat ramp

I have owned and pulled a boat up the same steep ramp out of the mighty Mississippi with both a 2016 SR5 auto and a 2020 OR MT. There was no rolling backwards with the auto, but definitely with the manual.

I have no experience with a OR or Pro manual, but I have heard more than one report that they behave differently than the others. One theory put forth that makes some intuitive sense to me, is that the OR and Pro autos are designed to roll backwards a limited amount because this is benefit in off-road situations.

If you fail to make it up an obstacle, it’s convenient to roll backwards and try it again.

I never thought to rely on the automatic forward motion on hills. Sounds like user error to me

    For trivia's sake:
The OR and Pro have crawl control - any truck so equipped requires a different kind of brake booster. Therefore the brake hold is going to be different on those.

As far as I know all automatic trims do have a safety shut off if you roll it in the wrong direction for too long. I made that mistake once when positioning my trailer in my driveway, thinking I could use gravity to inch it a few feet. Instead the truck killed the engine, screamed, and the dashboard called me a dumbass. So it's generally not a good idea to purposefully roll it backwards in the forward gear or visa versa, because the truck will yell at you for doing so.

Yes I heard the OR and Pro autos are different than the other autos, but I’ve never driven one. I do know that my OR manual will roll backwards right off a cliff

Why is it bad on an automatic transmission? I can see letting the clutch slip being bad on a manual, but this isn’t the same thing with an automatic transmission. The gravity force it is experiencing is the same direction of force, relatively speaking, as wind, road and mechanical resistance pushing back on it when you are driving forward.

Same scenario, only "automatic" mechanicals are holding you in place, clutch packs, and fluid pressure. Autos were not meant to hold you on a hill, grade whatever, without brake assist. You are slipping the auto clutches, torque converter, doing as much or more damage. Ski

    Yeah.
Wait, what? What happens when you are just sitting at a stop light in D? No different than sitting on a hill. Still not advised.

When you use the gas pedal on an auto instead of the brake to hold yourself on a hill it will heat up the trans. Do it long enough and you dash will light up with a trans overheating issue. Just use the brake to hold on a hill.

    Yeah.
Well, of course. Who does that? I was saying that if it's holding you on the hill at idle, it is no different than sitting at a stop light. Letting it roll backwards or using more RPMs for an extended period of time is going to heat things up.

    Work in progress...
Try a motorcycle on a cold day, when your hands are numb, and a road full of late for work commuters behind Ya. One foot on the brake, one foot on the ground and one chance to get it right.

Boat ramps you should drive it like a stick. 2 feet, one always on the brake even slightly dragging brakes until you get forward momentum.

Isn’t the same thing happening just driving it fast or up a hill? It’s designed to do all that to just move the vehicle. Pulling a trailer or boat up a ramp won’t overheat the tranny if you are using all three- the gas, brake and parking brake in conjunction with each other- it just takes getting used to doing it on any new vehicle. I complain about the OP’s opposite point- I wish the OR AT would let it roll backwards in drive without all that grumbling hill holding it does when you try.

The clutch packs aren't "slipping", the torque converter is. Torque converter is a completely fluid/hydraulic coupling, designed to "slip" until you raise the rpms and the trans fluid pump starts pumping more pressure into it.

Torque converter lock-up is a completely different function and doesn't happen until you're cruising at speed

Scrubbed some tires, and knocked a dent out.
On the first week of me owning the truck it rolled back in the driveway so I could reposition. No big deal to me, I was expecting it. What I wasnt expecting was the giant metallic clang it made! Still have no idea exactly what it was. Drive shaft doesnt seem loose or anything.

No money, all went to truck...
just double foot the pedals. This is really a stupid gripe...... Not the truck, inexperienced driver....
