at first, I thought the valves were out of spec or it was in the process of spinning a rod bearing. but the techs at work looked at me kind of crazy and said they couldn't duplicate the issue

I didn't rev it. it just started this morning so I recorded it so that when I got to work, I could show the master tech what was going on. I figured they wouldn't be able to duplicate it. The video was after I started it and everybody I showed it to said that didn't sound pretty. Its never sounded like this before at a cold start so that's why it was alarming to me. I pondered a cold start knock, but there was no leading events that would cause there to be any problems

well. let us know what happens when you rev it up a bit. my truck makes weird noises at idle which i assume is the fuel injector cleaning cycle. it goes away when you give it some gas. i'd be concerned if it still makes this noise at higher rpms.

I wasn't 6 feet away, I was right next to it. I was on the passenger side because that's where the noise was most prominent. Ill leave the "opening the hood and crawling under it while its running" to the technicians.

    Welcome to TacomaWorld.

If you want a good answer, you have to be able to ask a good question. Sounds like the guy was trying to help you ask a good question, but keep complaining, that will be sure get others to help you.

Text on the internet doesn't covey "tone of voice" at all, and even then it didn't seem like he was giving you a hard time.

Saying something is worthless sounds a bit harsh. It could have been worded like "We can't give any helpful suggestions from the video. Maybe try this..." Most on here are trying to learn.

I'm a miss. But I guess I can try to word it like this, does it sound like a rod knock/cold start rod knock/about to spin a rod bearing? I don't know what any of those sound like. It's a very loud tick coming from the passenger side towards the back.

You checked the oil yourself? Did you check it again after they did another oil change (for whatever reason..)?

I checked when I got to work, and it was full. I watched them do the second oil change again today and it was full.

if it happens to be the cleaning system, any reason it's so loud? does the fuel injector cleaning cycle normally kick on when the truck first starts up, or just whenever it senses too much carbon build up?
