The manifold bearings are a joke, so don't run with that one. I'm guessing the noise is normal in these engines. I've heard a few since owning a tacoma with the same engine. Seems every once in awhile theres a noisier one you come across. Doesn't mean their bad.

Thats good to know. I've had it for two years and never heard a noise like it. I figured somebody on here may recognize the noise from a problem they've had and might be able to shed a light on it. The ticking is really clear on my phone, maybe not so much online.

No it wasn't, but your video sure was. Listen to the damn mechanic. You came in asking for a mechanic's help.

Why so hostile? Goodness. That was my video, and the comment was already addressed by others way earlier... We've moved on... It's my truck, so I'm addressing the new comments that are giving new input.

My ears aren't what they used to be...

Without some way of getting a directional idea of where the noise is coming from, it's hard to make a guess. What I'm hearing sounds like an idler pulley or maybe even an exhaust gasket leak, but my ears aren't what they were. Both of those could come on suddenly, though the exhaust gasket leak wouldn't go away when warm whereas an idler pulley could get better when warm.

What the hell do I know? A person would need to crawl around with an open hood to get a better idea where the sound is coming from.

You seem to like to call names, so how bout this: Snowflake. (I'm a Boomer, BTW. In my years on this rock I've learned a few things.)

People here mostly were trying to help, it's what we do here on TW (well, a couple were dicking around). I guess the brutal honesty was a bit much for your sensibilities. Brutal honesty, though, can cut through the bullshit and get closer to a resolution quicker. It works better than butthurt.

Ah, what the hell, today has been a sh$tshow since I crawled out of bed, what was I expecting?

Again, check the rotator splint, it needs to be repaired asap. Yes reusing this.

So you work at Toyota and are not even familiar with the general warranty terms that have been in place for a very long time. No wonder you joined a web forum looking for answers and to complain.

3-years or 36,000-miles whichever occurs first. Your vehicle is also covered by a powertrain warranty lasting 5-year or 60,000-miles.

It has 68k on it, and it's a 2016. So, both of those have passed. The complimentary Toyota care maintenance was up before I bought it.

I could have, so my apologies. This morning when I started it, it sounded normal. So, it could have been the injector cleaner like others have said, but hearing it for the first time, it sounds really rough. I appreciate all of you guys who helped!

My 2 cents (and worth every penny) IMO: For me: that recording you made is fine; it is close enough to the truck, clear enough, loud enough, and distinctive enough that if it was my truck making that noise after I just started it , I prob would have panic-shut it down immediately and called AAA to tow it to my trusted mechanic for diagnosis. I don't think I would crawl under my truck if it was making that kind of noise. FWIW: it doesn't sound like an early-warning rod knock and if it is indeed the "injector cleaning cycle": It sounds like it's broken.
    :spending:

    Maybe
a spun bearing and it's about to throw a rod through the block? But to me more like like valves hitting pistons...at least metal-to-metal somewhere anyway...still very bad of course.

YMMV Good luck, and welcome to Tacoma World! :pccoffee:

IMO: Sound decision. I wouldn't get under that truck making that noise either: or my own for that matter.

That is relevant, (if it's true) how? 4,592 "likes". Folks here seem to be listening. Must be doing something right.
