The guy who does crawlpedia is the owner of filthy Motorsports and he has a great YouTube video on king shocks. As well as some other good videos on different shock and coilover stuff.

IMO it's all in the hands of the tuner given everything else being identical. There are some differences in the valves and stuff like that but that's what the differences would be. You can slap on some box stock kings then slap on some box stock foxes and the foxes ride better because they got the factory tune better for a stock replacement, or vica versa. But you get some that are tuned specifically for the vehicle from any of the really top tier companies and imo it would be hard to tell a difference if you can keep all other variables the same (which is impossible). Shocks and tuning them and the way they feel is a very subjective thing and each person might want something a little different than the other based on driving style/habits.

But this is the black hole that is shocks and suspensions. It gets to the point of do you want a race car or as good of a jack of all trades vehicle.

Not sure I would put too much stock into that. Now if you start comparing icon or billies (top tier ones) they are a different style of shock and a person may not like the digestive style of valving and the way it handles so they switch. I've read all the hate from all ends. I ran fox on all my old dirt bike stuff. I think a lot of that has to do with group think. Personally I went with king because for what I was looking for king was cheaper than fox, ads, radflo, or icon. My choice would of been ads if I could of afforded it. They have some really cutting edge valving technology that I think puts them a little above the rest, but they are also like the most expensive top tier shock in the market and I don't think it warrants the price difference.

Actually watching his explanations on hydro bumps made me reconsider the way I am going to bump my truck when I upgrade the shocks yet again and get the suspension the way I really want it. He'll also be the shop I call when it's time for the front end. I went with accutune for the rears and don't get me wrong I think they got the set up pretty spot on for what I have now and won't hesitate to recc. them again. Once I actually get a workshop that I can do stuff in then I'll start dabbling in tuning and messing around with that. Rebuilding isn't too difficult it's the black magic of tuning that separates the boys from the men and guys that know what they are doing from those that just know enough to be dangerous.

Try rebuilding hydraulic cylinders like on dumb beds and stuff. My first couple of times I took a bath in hydraulic fluid. That was a ton of fun let me tell you.

This is the truth. I think a lot of people end up with off-the-shelf shocks without a tune and it is not even close to good.
I had the experience when I designed this very kit, I was behind schedule and no one had stock, except I found a pair of Fox from Offroad Warehouse with off-the-shelf valving, and they were very stiff.

Then I ended up going with Fox DSC tuned by Accutune and wow, totally worth a good accurate tune, great ride quality and handling.

I just bought from Accutune again, 2.0x12 Fox Factory Race series non-DSC for my 1st gen Tundra relocation and I can wait to see how those are.

I am very interested in the 1st gen tundy relocation. As I will be getting one of those soon. :D I am sad to see that you'll be getting rid of the shackle flip on them though. You were one of the first ones I visited for suspension stuff for the tundra.

So blocks work fine with a flip kit?

He's talking about a shackle flip not U-bolt flip. To your question, yes a U-bolt is fine with a block

Yet another reason I'm happy to buy from archive. Polite clarity on noobie questions. I'm so excited to have a supreme suspension make over.

Interesting read on the Fox vs King. I'd like to see a comparison on the other manufacturers as well.

I highly doubt ADS or Radflo are any better or even as good as Fox build quality. I don't know if it is still true, but Fox Factory series 2.5 had a stainless 17-4 shaft, which for me was a big deal.

ADS supposedly has a slick valving set up that is better than the others. Until there is an actual tear down and comparison hard to tell.

ADS is literally 2 hrs from my doorstep, they’re in Tucson. I’d love to be an ALL ADS fanboy but there are a few reasons I will likely just choose king over them. Makes me feel like a non-local-supporting sellout at times

One of the obvious reasons I’d choose king over fox front mid travel coilovers is the King’s have longer extended measurements. Then that means I’m not going to run Fox rear relocation shocks because I’m NOT ABOUT to mix two shock brands like that on my truck. My OCD would be :bananadead:

What's the difference in extended length King vs. FOX 2.5 extended coilovers? What's that mean in the difference of travel between the two?
