    Hi Everyone,

I'm sharing my experience with a 2nd Gen Manual Transmission Toyota Tacoma with 150K miles that was burning oil, hoping to help those in a similar situation.

    Signs and Issues:
    1. Gear Noise: Last summer (2023), I started hearing a gear noise, especially when shifting to 2nd and 3rd gear. Initially, I thought it was a loose component in the exhaust system.

    2. Exhaust System Check: I checked and confirmed the exhaust system was fine, but the noise persisted. I also checked for oil leaks and found none. The transmission and engine were dry from the bottom.

    3. Dealership Visit: I took my Tacoma to a Toyota dealership for a full assessment. They suggested several repairs, including a complete steering rack replacement, and noted the engine oil was low. After paying almost $4K, my Tacoma seemed back to normal.

    4. Noise Returned: After 500 miles, the noise returned. I contacted the dealership, but they didn't respond about the internal oil burning issue.

    5. DIY Solution: I researched online and discovered the problem could be the PCV valve, which costs around $12. Here’s the link to the part. I replaced it myself in 10 minutes.

    6. Results: Now, 2K miles later, my Tacoma runs smoothly.
    Lesson Learned:
Toyota dealers might not always prioritize your convenience. While the techs may seem knowledgeable, they can miss simple fixes. I hope this helps other Tacoma owners avoid unnecessary expenses.

    Peace!

this is on the list of 100k maintenance items for my relatives '11 single cab AT i am looking after
the 2TRFE is currently at 98k miles and I am Not Sure if it is burning or Not burning oil... i have found the oil checkStick to be insanely HARD to read (compared to my Gen1 checkstick).

    one side reads one level
flip it over and the other side reads something else
re-insert stick and pull it out to find a big dry gap in the middle on the stick
oil above oil below the dry gap in the middle

PCV vent valve looks like you need to wrench it off behind the cylinder on passenger side, it does not just pull out of a grommet?

OP, What exactly did you have done at the dealershop that coined $4000 ?

bless the AT transmission checkstick on these rigs! so much non-hassle to drain ~4qts of ATF T-IV and refill to avoid the dealershop 300$ raping of my pockets!
