My T4R does the same thing. It's not unique to Tacomas

I have come to realize mileage has three basic parts.

The first is the amount of aerodynamic drag induce. This truck has a number of tiny and I mean tiny airfoils to reduce drag but they probably reduce noise more effectively. The fact is Toyota made this truck look bigger with the tall front end. It acts like a huge wall against the wind. From my experience flying an airplane cowl flaps that allow engine cooling will reduce speed by about 3 kts and they are only about 6" wide and stand about 3" into the airflow.

The second part is the weight of the vehicle your moving and the energy required to make it move.

The last and the most important is the amount of wasted energy used to stop the vehicle. This one we have the most control over. Coasting to a stop is most efficient. Accelerating just to stomp on the brakes is a huge waist. So if I drive like grandma with slow starts, lower speed and providing more space between me and the vehicle in front of me then I can coast longer.

The Taco is designed to get the best milage for grandma by delaying rapid starts, making it more difficult to race to the stop sign by shifting sooner and keeping RPM down.

You can help the drag problem with a bed cover a little, weight is weight but if you don't push grandma to the passenger seat don't expect better MPG's, my long term average not towing is 15.5 in a hilly area.

I've had my Tacoma since spring and although a bit under powered for my taste, it's been a good cruising vehicle and capable.
I can't say I've had any issues with the transmission but maybe I'm not as particular.
I'm mostly in the city and with the terrible winter roads, I'm in 4x4 often and am averaging 14.5 l/100 km.

Limited wheels, extra rope hooks in bed.
I've noticed I have much less transmission complaints when I put my foot down harder..

On the flip side the mpg drops to 17-18 mpg...

I'm wondering if some of the guys that claim no transmission issues are getting poor mileage???

1000 miles on my Tacoma and no complaints so far. Big smile on my face every time I drive it.

Although I am directly comparing it to my last few cars which included an old Subaru station wagon I've driven for the last 5 years. Before that I have a '99 Dodge 2500 Cummins 4speed and that thing had a terrible terrible automatic tranny/ETC. I think they sourced 4th from a tonka toy. Oh and I have my '85 Pickup rock crawler on 37's which is a total dog even with 5.29s.

I also live in the foothills and frequent the mountains and I haven't had any issues with the Tacoma shifting erratically. I have not taken it on a long road trip on a freeway yet so I can't speak to that. I should note that I am a mpg whore so I drive like a grandma.

I've even been overly sensitive to all the issues I read here and nothing (knock on wood).

Also if you think about it, all this complaining (legit or not) is going to hurt your resale value... A little google-fu will turn up these complaints and sour a potential buyers.

Also OP did the lift and bigger tires change any of the issues you have listed? Make them better/worse/no change?

This TSB did nothing to fix the cold shift flare for mine.

Same here however the flare happens at random times warm or not. truck now goes 1,2,3,4,3,4,5 before I even hit 60km/hr (postrev1)
Trans also has felt "slippy" for the first 10mins of driving (since new)

Just got off the phone with the service manager at my dealer. He says he's been speaking to engineers at toyota and they are looking into replacing my transmission..... Not sure if thats a good sign or not.

There was a fella in London years ago who had a chev truck with a lot of problems. The dealers wouldn't fix it so he had it painted yellow with big black letters...
"Lemon". The best negative advertising you can get. I don't recall what became of him.
