If it's detonation (or something wrong in EGR, sensor, etc) wouldn't there be a CEL? OTOH the symptoms also include abnormally high MPG so maybe there is an issue with very lean or even with the ECU.

Mine does this too every now and then. Seems to be provoked by transitioning slowly from no-load to minor-load on the engine in the lower rev range (1250-1500). Like starting to accelerate up hill after coasting for a brief bit. It has happened probably 6 times in 9500 miles. It makes a pretty decent racket for about 2 seconds then returns to normal. I had simply assumed it was poor programming and i had somehow caught the fuel injection system off-guard, leaving it confused about the appropriate injection mode. It isn't repeatable enough for me to have a prayer with the dealer.

My truck has the same issue. Slapping/knocking/sewing machine noise is a "feature" for the crappy v6.

I'm not happy about you guys, the frustration is real. But at least I know I'm not alone. Tomorrow I have a meeting with the dealer's tech manager, they promised to check this issue in depth, they're quite interested since I'm the only one reporting the slapping/knocking issue so far, well trusting what they're saying.

But the thing is, I tested two other trucks, none of them knocked or slapped and mine seems to be the more noisy of the three. Mine was manufactured on Oct 2015, the other 2 after November. (Made in Texas).

I think you might be probably right, because it seems that way, the change between injections modes is screwed somehow.

A friend of mine (mechanic) took a seminar about direct injection and atkinson cycle engine, etc. I showed him a video of my truck engine's noise, he started laughing and said, "Dude, get used to it because there are noisiest than yours".

Does it sound like a manual car that is in to high of a gear trying to accelerate?
The tranny is just in to high of a gear and not down shifting.

Everyone's favorite TSB might solve it then. :D

My natural tendency is to lift off the throttle when the racket ensues... so it could be me backing off that shortens or prolongs it.

    Are we talking spark knock?

I'm not sure what piston knock is. It sounds like rod knock.... There is also piston slap..... All are different thast spark knock. Spark knock, detonation, preignition..... sounds like a bunch of popcorn going off real fast.

I've already submitted a car complaint at w w w . carcomplaints . c o m. (the only one that says piston knock). Go and post your experiences, for now it is the only thing we can do to be heard.

Regarding the ECT button. I've already tried indeed. The thing is , we are not supposed to do "workarounds" on new cars, specially a $34k+ truck. And I don't know 'bout you guys, but that is without towing.

I can't imagine the noise under load.

Try the transmission tsb. I'm sure that will help. It seems to give a similar experience to the ect button. I've been pretty happy with it so far.

For those wondering all the 93 octane means is that it is that much more resistant to preserve ignition/detonation and in this day and age all it is, is the additive package they put in the fuel. This is the reason I only use top tier rated fuel stations like QT, Shell and the like. Sounds to me like what is happening is the motor is lugging while the torque converter is locked, just before it unlocks.

93 octane burns slower than 87.... that's why it's more resistant to spark knock. If your engine isn't designed for 93, you probably shouldn't be using it.
